ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Tournament Director of the BVI Tropical Shootout, Mr Steve E. Parillon has disclosed that the event is in danger of being cancelled this year and is asking for urgent donations to be made to keep the tournament alive.

“Right now I’m short on funds so I’m trying to create a pledge to try to make this event possible,” Parillon related while adding, “cancelling this event would be very detrimental to the country…”

The BVI Tropical Shootout is an annual college basketball tournament and is expected to feature four NCAA Division 1 teams this year, including University of Southern Mississippi; University of Arkansas, Little Rock; Jackson State University, Alabama; and Coppin State University, Baltimore, Maryland.

VI National player, Norville Carey, who plays out of the University of Southern Mississippi, is also expected to participate in the tournament now in its second instalment. The Tropical Shootuout is scheduled to be held at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town from December 20-21, 2013.

Parillon said his current focus is having the community come together to assist to make the event possible and has appealed for persons to email:bvitropicalshootout@gmail.com or call 544-0480 to pledge their donations for the event.

He is requesting as many contributions as possible and is hoping that contributors can pledge a substantial amount towards ensuring that the event gets off the ground successfully.

The Director said the importance of the tournament could not be overstated noting the relevance of offering the VI an opportunity to get into the sports tourism market.

He also related that some bookings have already been made for accommodation for the tournament.

I agree wid De man concept, but boss tell me; how dem funds really being spent? Anybody seeking contributions whether from individuals, businesses or Gov must have transparent accounting and demonstrate how people's hard earned money will be used. Just a suggestion. I have no issues contributing because I support the cause.

Everyone talking about Sports Tourism, remind me how much money this event is making for the country again? You want Government to pay for Hotel, Flight and Food for about 64+ people. How much are you putting in Steve? How much monies did you make from the other shoot outs? I mean it's a good thing that your doing - showcasing the teams that the VI players are apart of but, if the tree isn't baring fruit cut it down.

In light of the dark blanket hovering over our offshore industry, it is incumbent upon the leaders of this territory to give some thought about other avenues in which we can derive revenue to sustain these beautiful Virgin Islands. We have to assess ways in which we can augment tourism. Apart from our beaches, etc. what other areas can we look at to lure visitors here? An article on the economic benefits of sports tourism alluded to the fact that “Sports tourism is a thriving industry. The Sports Tourism Expo states it is the fasting growing sector in the global tourism industry, and in 2008 made up 10% ($600 billion) of the profits made by the tourism industry.” This isn’t about Steve anymore, it’s about us looking at this country and asking ourselves what can we do as a people to assist in developing this niche market.

Steve maybe if you teach horses to play basketball maybe you can get help from the Gov't. Or even better, figure a way to legalize betting on the games and I'm sure you'd get help you need. Shame on you BVI for not supporting this. Last I looked at horse racing I didn't see any non-BVI in stands or hotels.

I'm not a BVI islander but I enjoy coming to your beautiful island. It would be a shame if this tournament doesn't get pulled off. In my opinion this would be a black eye on the BVI. At this point it doesn't matter who is at fault here, these games are on the teams schedules, and they have committed to play in this tournament. In my opinion, there are two things that can come out of this. 1. the tournament is played and word gets out on how accommodating, professional, and awesome the tournament was in the BVI. Or 2. the tournament is canceled and word spreads on how unprofessional, unaccommodating, and terrible that we lost 2 games off our schedule committing to play in a tournament in the BVI.

Do you all know the whole story? Government should just give a few thousand dollars to the first person with a sad story? Come on now. It's a good initiative but how is it being taken forward? Steve is good people but he has a lot to learn about promotion etc.

FIRST OF ALL STEVE SHOULD HAVE RESPECT THE GOVT. BY SPEAKING TO THEM, THEN NEGOTIATE WITH THE SCHOOLS AFTER, NOT PUT THE ENTIRE COUNTRY IN A LIMBO. HOWEVER, THERE IS A RIGHT WAY TO DO EVERY SINGLE THING. STEVE SO CALL FRIENDS AND BODIES NEED TO TELL HIM THAT HE HAS APPROACH IT WRONG.

take a page from the usvi Steve, seek and secure sponsors, provide knock em dead package to the govt pro sports tourism, depicting the benefits to the bvi. Put on a great show, visitors return and word spread to attract more and better teams for the years to come. Without local sponsors and the govt. on board you dead in the water. Secure a major sponsor besides the bvi govt......
