Big D & Slevin triumphant in Labour Day horse races in St Croix
The feature race for the $9000 purse was hyped as a rematch among Big D, Simon Sez Run and El Real Madrid after Big D’s surprise win a couple of weeks ago. Big D would prove that his win was no fluke as he snatched victory again over the 1-1/16 of a mile distance.
The co-feature six-furlong race, which attracted a purse of $6,500, was won by favorite Slevin who overcame the likes of Her Argument, Alley Cat, Bay Park Boy and Desert Storm.
Race No. 8, The Big Gyal Rule Stakes, covered a distance of 1-1/16 of a mile with an $8,000 purse. The big lady to shine was Turned to Gold. The other horses in that race were Holy Barbara, Leggy Blonde and Imperial Award.
There were some 10 races on the Randall "Doc" James Racetrack. There were no Tortola horses in action.
Attention now shifts to the Clinton E. Phipps racetrack in St Thomas, United States Virgin Islands (USVI) for their Labour Day horse races on September 8, 2013.
The Boyz Stables newly acquired horse, ‘Leave It to Bern’ leads a list of Tortola contenders heading over to the neighbouring island with hopes of capturing glory.
The list also includes Good Boy Daddy, All Country and Winaholic.
Notably absent will be speed demon and this year’s VI Triple Crown Champion, ‘Really Uptown’, which remains out of competition due to injury.
