Back to the drawing board for TRC’s CEO

Hon. Vanterpool would like to see a Virgin Islander be given the TRC CEO position.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool has asked the new chairman on the telecommunications watchdog agency – Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) - to compile a new list of candidates for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position.

“I have asked Ayana Hull-Braithwaite to have the Board present a list of potential candidates,” Minister Vanterpool told Virgin Islands News Online on Friday December 30, and added that the board will have its first meeting shortly.

Since the departure of Tomas Lamanauskas in June 2010, five individuals were shortlisted after going through a rigorous interview process under the tenure of the then TRC Chairman Collin Scatliffe. However, none of the applicants were Virgin Islanders.

But Hon. Vanterpool had hinted in a previous interview with this news agency that he would like a Virgin Islander to fill the position.

“I will try to appoint a CEO as soon as possible. I have my thoughts but we will look at all that is presented, but I certainly want to make sure it’s a local. I think there are locals who are available and who can do the job. So we will review and make sure that happens,” he had stated on November 9, 2011.

This is just another way of telling General he ain't getting the job. General if I was you I would'nt lower myself by applying again. Mark already know that he want the previous manager for LIME for the position. Mark you have already made a great mistake with the contract for Claude don't make another one. General has proven himself time and time again what more do you want from him. It is he who is holding the fort everytime someone leaves and it is him that you all go to whenever you need advice about telecommunication. Even before there was a TRC he was the the face of telecommunication in the BVI. Don't put him through this again how much time must a BV Islander be humiliated in his country. Give the man a break he deserve it.

The man who you refer to, the former Manager of LIME, is he a local? Or is he 'considered' local? Mark clearly said he wants a local and you imply that it means General WHO IS A LOCAL will not be getting the job? I'm not sure I follow your logic on this one. Could it be that the former LIME manager is a 'belonger' hence considered 'local' in the context of 'rights'? At the end of the day it should be about who can get the job done, if Guy can get it done then he should get it. We'll see how it plays out but either way, you will have people talking and hating for hating sake! That's BVI!

This is ignorant talk they need to hire the person best suited for the job local or not. If it is not a local then a local should understudy the person and given training so they can can the job when the person's contract expires. There is a reason why a local was overlooked in the first place. They were not the best candidate!!

if the standard is to hire someone most suitable for the work then they will hire a B V islander. end of story

I agree with "keep it real", Rattie, "if the standard is to hire someone most suitable for the work then they will hire a B V islander. end of story" Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is not the end of the story, if a BVIslander is hired and do a shotty job, you might be the first one shouting in Mark ears asking him wa he doing, second guessing him and criticizing. I don't have a problem with expats. I have a problem when there are suitable BVIslanders for certain posts and they are overlooked for expats. Not because I am all for BVIslanders, it means that I want some "johnie come lately" in critical positions making dumb decisions just because "they from here".

Oh please give me a break, we have locals here born BVILanders who can do the job, we don't need to be wasting any money bringing someone on contract for us to understudy. We went to the same schools as they did and got the same degrees as they did also. We do not need to understudy anybody, we as bvilanders are just as talented and capable of doing the job. Understudy my foot!

You all were quick to accept Melanie Amaro as a 'Local' though. I remember going to school with her mother and she would be called an island-woman. People are only local when it is convenient - set ah prejudiced, ignorant fools! Telecommunications/technology is one of the most important issues that this government has to consider. Giving this job to General just because he 'born here' would be the most foolish step. This needs to be someone who knows what they are doing, whether they be born-here or not.

@wisdom, let me tell ayo dis once and for all. I include myself. If you from here, you should know, we do not give birth to our children abroad because we don't like the BVI, we give birth to our children abroad in order to broaden thier opportunities. I sick au people critizing us for going st. thomas and beyond to give birth to our children. Every body wants what is best for their children. I have property here, my five children born in the states. If they chose to go to university and I cant afford it, they don't have to rely on the BVI to give them a scholarship and knock them about because their parents don't have a popular name, student aid is readily available to assist my child in his/her education withouy people here cutting a bunch au style on dem. Right now we have children 'BORN HERE' sitting down home since graduation two and three year ago. One girl met me and said, misson meen get au job yet!!! You tink if she was american she wouldn't au don tap into her U.S. citizenship to help her do something with those three years?????? All my children born america but them belly button fell off right here in the BVI, and like it or not MY CHILDREN DEM FROM HERE. Melanie claim the BVI first, because that is all she know as a child growing up. My children are teenagers and when we take trips to the main land, any one asking them where they from, the first thing out of their mouth is The BVI, just like Melanie. My ancestors on both mother and father side (stemming from the 1800's) from right here, and you want to tell me just because we birth our children in the U.S., bring them home, raise them here, educate them here, nuture them into the fear and admonition of God right here, just like our parents did for us, you mean to tell me my children, Melanie and the like, ain from here??? I went to school wid Debbie too, and yuh lie, nobody never call dem no island people. And even if they were called that, the point is this is where they chose to call home. Inspector Sylvester (Melanie Grandfather) was a well respected man in the territory and in his lower estate community. SO stop tell lie!!! I agree with you on the telecommunication issue, but please don't mix that up with the Melanie situation. If you went school here wid we, and you still here, whom ever you are, chances are, you were born here and if that is the case, its time for us to stop allowing people to make us feel guilty for making decisions that are geared to benefit our children. Look how they treating children wa born here to foreign parents. Them kinda born here children is not entitled to a passport til they 18. You eva hear more nonsense??? America don't cut style on you like da boss!!!! Once a child see the light of day in america, they are considered american. They could do all they want, OBAMA saw the light of day in america, belly button drop in america and aint no-one could refuse him presidency, whether they like it our not. Here in Tortola we recycling the same people in government for decades, at least I know that my child has a better chance to be president of the United States than to become Premier of this little BVI.

No matter who is selected there is going to be noise. Just look at the pattern. Every time someone that is not a local is hired there is talk. When a local is hired there is still talk. We are a set of self-hating ingrates and that is the crux of the problem. We only pay lip service to the concept of hiring locals but we are never satisfied when they are chosen because we always find some reason why they shouldn't be. For a local to be accepted he or she must be popular with everyone and liked by everyone irrespective of his or her ability and level of competence. We tend to always see our cousin-family chosen then we rejoice. Our deeply insular and provincial attitudes are not only dividing us but ruining us daily. When it is convenient we define what a BVI Islander is. Even when they are born in the United States we call them BVI Islanders but those who come here achieve Belonger status, have their children here and raise them here we want to have them excluded. Well, guess what? It's not going to happen. Those who have helped to build this country will continue to share in the spoils. When the country suffers we all suffer together so don't try to marginalize them and relegate them to some sort of second class citizens only worthy of part taking in what's left over. There is enough for everyone. Rest assured that whoever is selected for the position will be qualified for it as the new Chairperson along with the Minister will ensure this happens. I do not think Mrs. Hull-Braithwaite will pander to the whims and fancies of those who want to see a local there just for the sake of it. She will do due diligence in selecting qualified and competent individuals. That much is certain. Remember that many objected to her appointment even though she is very qualified, dignified, and very competent. Many of us are now poised to benefit from Melanie Amaro's success as we claim her to be one of us even though she was not born here. So too are those who have come here and sacrificed and helped to build this great little nation. We like to boast of our children doing well in other people's countries holding down top jobs but don't seem to want any of that here. Stop the double standard. The BVI is a much better place because of the influx of people from all over just like the United States, Britain and other countries are better off for their immigrant population which includes a great number of us Tolians.

All you all need to stop. Politicians only intrested in getting re-elected. I dont know what gad fly has stung Virgin Islanders, but there seems to be something in their psyche that cause them to hate each other. We all need to get closer to the creator not that , that may changte minds buut individual liberty is at a treshold begging for guidance.
