VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – It took a number of weeks of insistent and consistent pushing and promoting that resulted in yet another show of the family spirit of the residents of Virgin Gorda who took to bull by its horns to clean up their island.

Yesterday Saturday March 1, 2014 was considered ‘Island wide clean-up day’ and businesses and residents did not fail themselves as they did what was necessary bringing out even the children to participate in the activity.

Today walking through the streets, up the hills and down the valleys reveals a totally different sight to the day prior. Coordinators and others were appalled at the large number of garbage that was collected.

“One thing that we have learnt from this is that we need to be more responsible in the way we dispose our garbage. We need to also be our own police and rebuke anyone who we see messing up our islands because today (yesterday) was hard work to clean up in the hot sun,” said one student of the St Mary’s Primary School.

Among the many that were active in the island wide clean-up initiative was STARR Home and Gardening Works, Valley Sound Lions and Leos and St. Mary's and Cedar School Students. The firefighters also coordinated their efforts to ensure that they take part as the cleaned from the entrance of the basketball court to the copper mine ruins.

Guavaberry Spring Bay Vacation Homes and Bowline Charters, the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival Committee, BFEC Secondary, the BVI Tourist Board, Village Cafe, and Virgin Gorda Village also got their hands into the cleaning exercise.

The Rosy's Crew, The Rosewood Little Dix Bay Group were visible in full force and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) Police officers station at Virgin Gorda chose to participate in the clean-up to mark the ended their police week activity.

This is an initiative many said should be like a “common cold” across the islands of the VI Territory.

I second that. Let's see your involvement. You took my name but you can't take my spirit in helping.

The fact that many showed up to clean VG proves your statement to be incorrect. As the saying goes, it takes one rotten apple to spoil the barrel. Most of the garbage collected originates from a few, not the majority.

I, too, would like to know. Too much wilful littering takes place and people need to take a little more pride in their surroundings.

Great job guys. As mention before people have little pride in their surroundings and the place that they call home. It's such a shame.

I personally wasn’t really shocked or surprised about the amount of garbage there was on the lower side of the road. In other words, let’s just say “Heineken” is the island’s most drank beer. Out of all the different bottles or cans of beers we picked up, we all agreed Heineken beer out runs all the rest. Bottles, paper, car parts, and a refrigerator were just a few of the different items that were picked up or still have to be picked up.

before you do something and cast trash. Ask yourself "who is going to clean it up?" These are kind and generous people. Too bad they have to do it. But it doesn't give those trashers permission to throw it out the window or on the street. Be part of the solution not part of the problem.
