EAST END/LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI – The British Virgin Islands Football Association’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations were given a tremendous boost at the end of September with the signing of a Development Contract and Lease Agreement which means work can now begin in earnest on a new home for Football in East End.

No sooner had the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) completed a highly successful Month long 40th Anniversary when the Association received even more exciting news with the signing by the Governor, his Excellency John S. Duncan and Premier Dr the Honourable. D. Orlando Smith for the Development Agreement for a Multi Purpose Sporting Facility at East End/Long Look and also a 25 year Lease Agreement for the use of the Land.

The signing of the contracts, at the end of September, marks the formal commencement of the BVIFA’s collaboration with the World Governing body for Football, FIFA, the BVI Olympic Committee and the Government of the VI to start work on the building of a new home for Football as well as Netball Courts, a running track and ancillary associated amenities.

The realization of the FIFA “Goal” project is finally a reality.

As BVIFA President, Mr. Andy Bickerton commented, “This enables us to formally commence the Project and submit the detailed architectural/engineering drawings to the next meeting of the Town & Country Planning Department later this Month. The Government will now commence clearing the site of the existing buildings etc., including the East End sewage project sand and related equipment being moved to a new location.”

Mr. Bickerton also explained that FIFA will approve a contract with the Project Manager and that the BVIFA can now commence the tender process for the moving of the fill from the Upper Greenland field and the leveling of the field. He also noted that once the site is cleared then construction works could begin as early as November, “God willing.”

The scope of works under the Development Agreement includes a regulation size football pitch, complete with associated facilities, a six lane 400m grass track, Netball and Volleyball Courts, a parking lot for 200 cars and a 1500 seater stadium.

The project, once completed, will be available to local schools and the community as a whole and will also act as a kick start for increased Football Sports Tourism, the hosting of International type matches and the further development of Hotels, Restaurants and entertainment in the East End area.

The BVIFA’s participation in the Goal Programme was approved by the Development Committee of FIFA at a meeting, chaired by FIFA Vice-President Issa Hayatou in the presence of the Chairman of the FIFA Audit and Compliance Committee, Domenico Scala, in Zurich back in March 2014, bringing the total number of supported projects to 668 across 202 member associations since the programme’s inception in 1999.

Why wasn't this facility created on Virgin Gorda.... VG has NO sporting facilities except for a basketball court. Tola has a semi erected field...VG has a lot of up and rising stars not only in basketball but in soccer, track and swimming. Let us spread the playing field for all.

They were unable to get land in VG. Several meetings with the Minister responsible for sports. It is a shame that they did this. government need to provide land or lease the grounds on VG to them. They will surely maintain and manage it better and it will be used for all sports. that's a guarantee!!!!

Is the main island with most of the population - you expect them to put this where only 2k people live and then gave the masses travel all the way to VG to play or spectate? - use your head

while I am glad to have sports on the agenda, and I know it has been worked on a long time, I still have questions about the complex size and where and how planned hotels and restaurants and "entertainment" will fit in relationship to the village and surrounding area. All this is planned and starting to move forward even before town and country approval. What if they want some elements changed? impact and traffic studies done? Things move before things ready it seems. just saying...

I am not against sports but the site is not the suitable place. It's already congested when school is out, the community centre, persons going to the softball field and so many persons living in the area. Another thing is, that was the official site for the festival now it's being relocated on the field that was done for some millions of dollars or it's going to be located in some property purchased to enlarging the field's parking lot very, very close the some people homes. Now that ain't right. The people of that district didn't seem to have any input on the project but I think the college area would have been the best site for such sports stadium. Our problem here that government should set as an example for building these oversized buildings is parking, parking and the site is not the right place.
