ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Acknowledging that there are challenges with the water distribution network across the Virgin Islands, Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has said the Minister of Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) is working “assiduously” to solve those challenges.

“There are a number of challenges for that but, overall, the Minister is leading a plan and a strategy to be able to improve the water distribution,” Dr Wheatley stated when asked about the water distribution woes while at a press conference on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

HDPE pipes being installed

The Premier said his government has already purchased HDPE pipes and those are being installed at various places in the Virgin Islands.

HDPE pipe is a type of flexible plastic pipe often employed for replacing aging concrete or steel main pipelines. Constructed from the thermoplastic HDPE (high-density polyethylene), it has low permeability and robust molecular bonding, making it suitable for high-pressure pipelines.

“Water turns off in some cases when Water and Sewerage [Department) is doing their work. Sometimes, of course, Water and Sewerage [Department] has to manage reservoir levels. There are a number of reasons why water would turn off in various places, but I am confident that the Minister, with the resources he has been given, would be able to make a serious improvement to the water distribution network,” Premier Wheatley stated.

I think that this pace will be maintained for the next 2 and a half years. Steady jamming. If they could get the airport started in 18 months, with some good candidates, VIP can have a clean sweep in 2027

Water is life. A First World country or desiring to be Furst World required a steady, reliable, quality , safe supply of potable water. Nonetheless, meeting this goal has been kicking the BVI @$$ for decades. Water and Sewerage Dept has been tagged by many as the worst performing Dept. True, the BVI is a water -challenged community but it can do mo better. Consequently, to effectively accomplish what Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley is aiming for requires a complete revamping, ie, production, laboratory testing, transmission, distribution, minimizing leakage and wastage timely maintenance and repair , etc. BiWater was a controversial issue which cycled through several elections. Has the concerns been addressed or the whole fight was disingenuous and a mirage? Or the issues still remain and silence has bought? The people need to know. The current water issue is a ROYAL mess, bringing $5M and expending approx $ 26 M. If it were a private operations, locks would have been on the doors and the place lock down.
