The workshop aims to help young residents of District Three enter the marine sector by explaining what it takes to work in the industry, operate vessels, and obtain relevant qualifications. Willock said the event follows meetings with local youth in the District Three community, many of whom expressed interest in careers ranging from boat captaincy to powerboat ownership and other entrepreneurial opportunities.

A team of industry practitioners, representatives from the college, the shipping registry, and other professionals will present on careers and scholarship opportunities in the marine field during the one-day workshop scheduled for Thursday, July 30, 2026.

Mr Compton Wintz, country manager for Navigare Yachting and one of the presenters, praised the initiative, saying, “Knowing is the key and knowledge is always a good investment.” He will speak on career paths in the sector and other related topics.

Dr Richard W. Georges, President of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, said the college is “pleased to connect with individuals desirous of pursuing marine careers.” He noted the institution offers a number of globally recognised certifications and highlighted the ‘Let’s Build VI’ scholarship programme initiated by the Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Honourable Sharie B de Castro (AL), adding, “funding does not have to be a barrier to these opportunities.”

In addition to marine career information, attendees will receive guidance on resume writing, professional dress, and their rights under the Virgin Islands labour code.

The workshop runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Valerie O. Thomas Community Centre, Sea Cows Bay, on the main island of Tortola.
