ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After the United Kingdom appointed Governor John S. Duncan OBE declared in a JTV Channel 55 ‘Spotlight’ interview with host Cromwell Smith aka Edju En Ka on Tuesday January 12, 2016, that a new Commissioner of Police has been identified and that he is not from the United Kingdom, our newsroom’s sources close to the selection process said it is left to be seen.

Is John S. Duncan being truthful?

Speaking to our newsroom this morning January 19, 2016 the source advised us that “I hope that Governor Duncan’s words do not come back to haunt him,” but when pressed would not go any further.

However, the same source also advised that five persons were interviewed for the post of Virgin Islands (VI) Commissioner of Police, after UK National Robin Smith snubbed the territory last year October after being selected for the post.

Of those interviewed, three were informed they were unsuccessful and one was offered a package while the other is on “reserve” just in case the chosen applicant refuses the package, according to the same source.

The source also reported that the new Commissioner of Police will not take up duties until about April of this year as Mr Alwyn James will continue to act until then.

Governor Duncan on the same JTV show last week was tight-lipped on the nationality or race of the incoming Police Commissioner but said “his nationality will be revealed in the fullness of time.”

Locals not qualified?

There have been calls by civil society, politicians, the media and talk show hosts for a local to take the reins of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force. In the almost 60 plus year history of the police force there have been only two local Police Commissioners; former Legislator and Attorney Vernon E. Malone and Reynell Frazer.

It has been claimed that there are no locally qualified persons or police officers to head the two hundred and thirty five man force, which is 98 % of officers of African descent. The Virgin Islands intellectual class has scoffed at the idea that no local person is ready to head up the police force.

Many have said there must at least be a regional applicant qualified to take the post of Commissioner of Police instead of having to bring someone from the UK.

Racism in RVIPF?

Within the last five to six years there have been issues of racism reportedly raising its ugly head in the police force. It is reported that all the United Kingdom Police Officers are being paid more than the local officers. It is also reported that many of them are even been paid more than the Acting Police Commissioner Mr James, who they report to. Many view this as downright and blatant economic racism.

The number of police officers cited is incorrect - the numbers are well down in the police force due to funding and issues with recruiting. So much so that even obtaining basic office supplies can take weeks. The police presence on the road has become less visible over the past year and the number of motorcycle/vehicle accidents has increased. The fact that there is no permanent commissioner is just one of the issues facing the police right now and the focus should be on selecting the best person for the job regardless of race and not getting hung up on that point over getting the police force in order and having proper funding and an adequately sized and trained force for the territory especially as numbers of visitors are growing. This is for everyone regardless of where we were born or choose to live.

These people need to stop toying with the minds of people and our country. Everything seems to be a darn game of semantics with lies and monopolistic applications of programs and jobs. We need to take to the streets and take our country back. Sick and tired of the nonsense now. Some elected officials are showing their true colours now. I wonder if they only got into political leadership to stuff their own pocks with the peoples money. Their actions are showing this daily. How many projects has Mark Vanterpool finished to date?

This is Wolf Blitzer with breaking news on CNN. VINO ur source is partially correct with their info, but ur late cuz the breaking news is that the COP is indeed a UK National but not presently working in a UK Police Force. The New COP to be is coming from the Police Force in Cyprus in the Middle East, check ur sources his name is known but will not be given. CNN respects the protocol and will not release his name to the public without the go ahead from the governor's office in the BVI. If U want the name u will have to check ur sources. Our sources in Cyprus and the BVI seems to be right on target. Stay tune to CNN for when the name is release by the governor CNN will be the first to bring it to u. This is Wolf Blitzer reporting from CNN in New York.

This is not true of course are qualified locals who could be the commissioner, they said that u have to attend an international recognized training institute in strategic management and leader since 2012 we have two locals officers attending that course in the UK of which the gov't spend thousands of dollars to have them trained, these officers families had to endure them being absent from home over 4months studying and they passed the court at Bramshill, UK with flying colours now it is said that they are not qualified for the post of COP. What makes them not qualified is it the colour of their skin or their place of birth. They live here all them adult lives. Come on John Duncan U said u is a man of fairness and principles, stop the stereo typing and hating in our society.

Could it be that neither 'local' applied for the job? That would make your outrage a little pointless... Just sayin'

Racism with salary desparity is rampant in the BVI especially in the private companies. But labour knows about the huge salaries the other colour gets in comparison to others because majority of them are on work permit.. Labour never ask a question. like why? So its the System to blame for all of this
