WEST END, Tortola, VI- Since the powerful Category 5 Hurricanes of 2017, Irma and Maria, destroyed the West End Ferry Terminal on Tortola, the struggle to bring about a new ferry terminal continues.

It started with a makeshift tent in the first months after the hurricanes. Public officers, visitors and residents had to be housed under a tent in an open space for entrance, exit and conducting business, including the collection of government funds.

Years later, following the outcry, a temporary facility was constructed to house ferry companies, Immigration, Customs and the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) agencies. However, the space is small and often crammed. The ferry dock, where the boats must dock to clear Customs and Immigration, can only accommodate one vessel at a time.

The dock also appears to be undermined and dilapidated. Many persons, including public officers using the facility, complain of the heat inside, the space limitations, and how it is in disrepair with an ugly aesthetic on the outside.

The West End Ferry Terminal continues to be a major point for departures and arrivals for ferries, charter vessels, local power boats, vessels from the USVI, Jost van Dyke and many going to the Cays for leisure.

New one coming soon?

To their credit, the Government of the Virgin Islands, via the BVI Ports Authority, has in the works the building of a new, modern, hurricane-resistant West End Ferry Terminal, hopefully to replace the temporary structure currently used. The last update was believed to be around February 2025, when the public was told that the bids received were over the government's budget of $15 million. The bids came in as high as $64 and $94 million US Dollars.

It is unclear what the way forward is, and in the meantime, the West End Ferry Terminal continues to be an embarrassment for the territory’s ports, not offering the best welcome to residents, nationals returning home, visitors, and others using the facility.

Meanwhile, BVIPA Deputy Managing Director Dean B. Fahie declined to comment, while Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) asked for more time to respond.

Them need to build a new ferry dock near the West End police station with a new harbour wall, and keep the ferries away from the private boats and charters.

Exactly the same. People pushing narratives so the gullible can jump on the bandwagon and stand behind the construction of a completely unnecessary over the top nonsensical eyesore design of a terminal. Something simple and affordable can be done to update and modernise the existing facility but not the elaborate eyesore that I saw in the rda plans.

apart from the hiccups things were moving. When CoVid hit we had the opportune timeframe to correct a lot of things, but nooooo, instead family, friends and lovers were built using our Social Security funds.

Plenty money for parties, first class air, best hotels and food plus massive pay rise for them all, but no money to fix the place up.

Let us keep it real. That terminal was destroyed from hurricane Hugo in 1989. Any questions???

However, it was flattened in 2017. The funds used during CoVid could have fixed that and many other things, especially while we were on lock down. Always on here trying to justify $h!+. Please tell us about our Covid funds.

It's the BVI in a nutshell.

Everything looks like absolute crap, and the government pretends they are "working"

It's only 8 years. We are lucky that Ronnie does not have one that can be rented?

The amount budgeted may not have in mind the kind of construction that engineers see as required. That being said, the bids of $64 million up to $94 million seem like a fantasy... A nice profit if you can make it. Do we really need the space age looking building in the designs? Something looking more like Pusser's Landing just across Sopers Hole seems more in keeping with the image we ought to want to present.

The building need not be expensive but functional, sturdy and sustainable. Not everything in Tortola need to be in the millions. this is why there is such a delay, even the proposals are in the millions...make it make sense....
