ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - As part of the ongoing conversation on race and the unfair treatment of people of colour by institutions around the world, Virgin Islands' Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) says the Virgin Islands continues to be subjected to second class treatment as a British Overseas Territory.

"We are part of a system that treats us, in many ways, like second class citizens and second class people, in spite all that our generations have achieved and in spite of all that we have proven that we are capable of," Hon Fahie said in a June 11, 2020, statement on eliminating racism.

Addressing systematic racism

"We have to get to the bottom of this problem once and for all," he said while noting that the murder of George P. Floyd Jr is forcing societies to confront the existence of systemic racism.

"We have to remove all the obstacles, such as distrust, so that we can proceed to continue building these Virgin Islands that we love and call home, in the way that we want to see it built," Premier Fahie said in reference to the Virgin Islands.

He said the upcoming Constitutional Review exercise in the Territory, therefore represents a 'golden opportunity' to address some of the issues plaguing the Territory where equality is concerned.

"It is a chance to examine the institutional framework and make adjustments to allow the people of the Virgin Islands the opportunity to breathe and to truly lift their heads up."

Equity Commission being established

The Premier said in an effort to assist this process, Government is moving to establish an Equity Commission.

"This Commission will be charged with the task of examining how the private and public sectors operate to determine to identify the systemic issues that undermine equity in our society and to find solutions for creating a more equitable environment for all our people."

He said the VI is in a fortunate position to be able to learn from what is taking around the world and does not have to wait until people become too frustrated before proactive steps are taken.

He said too regularly, the people of the Virgin Islands have been crying out about inequitable treatment in various areas.

"Racism is worse than COVID-19, but there is a cure for racism and that cure is love, which we already have inside of us. Love conquers hate, always," Hon Fahie underscored.

It is not racism - the UK Government looks down on all belongers regardless of color - and we have our foot firmly on the necks of the non-belonger island people and whites here in the BVI

Look at the mistakes made a wall an airline rolls royce engines a hospital consulant consultant consultant. It would not take much to become independent but look towards other territories that stood alone and look how they have failed. The Civil service Police & Jail would be run by people who's family are born here. What happens to the kiddy fiddlers when caught , what happens when people kill people with cars, when people buy airlines you see the problems. Also hurricane season nolonger having the RN on hand is a big minus in the call for independece

Independence is a process with a reasonable time line but most of all the people must have the will and determination to get there. Going independent and mismanaging or affairs is not the only way we will loose the VI. The UK is constantly picking at our delegated powers and is refusing to give us any devolved powers. to the government We are left stagnant with regressive control knocking at the door. We are one edict away from being tossed into a sea of equality with the other UK citizens. Imagine having to compete with the sharks, good luck with that. There are other options but we are not exploring them. In the end we will not become stronger or more self sufficient under our current relationship with the UK. We need to find our option and work towards that end.

We need fairness on those boards too. I can't understand how 1 person can be on 3 and 4 boards with all the qualified people that we proclaim to have. We are watching you the government too.

@islandgirl... no offense but isn’t that what they are? Their rights and opportunities are inferior to those of the dominant group in a society.Dominant group meaning locals(BVI landers)..... and I bet all who liked her ridiculous post are all “Island people” . Stop looking for the same rights and privileges locals have. They do not seek that status in your countries of origin so what makes you think you are entitled to the same right as a born Virgin Islander. Know youR place and locals wouldn’t be so harsh on you guys. “Islandgirl‘S” retarded post is a clear example of that. I’m just sick of you foreigners coming on these blogs blasting locals for their rights. They are entitled you are not . This is their home. . I think a lot of you got that twisted.

Few places in the world seek to live off the backs of others in the way of the BVIslander.

Government revenue - paid for by someone else outside the BVI.

Anything involving more than a desk job - worked by someone else.

Benefits, cash handouts and brown envelopes - not given to anyone else.

        It reeks.

This is not a new subject. You have always known they don't care about us. Black people have always been treated as second class citizens. You saw that when Irma and Maria hit us. Puerto Rico came in full force to help us. The UK dragged its feet and came later on. You have to decide if you want to be free with Independence or just keep taking handouts from the UK and answering to them for everything. It is something to ponder and you all in charge must meet with the people and decide.

But What about the love the BVI has for its fellow Caribbean brothers and sisters? Always trying to degrade them calling them "down island" but yall want the UK to treat yall better? Love begins at home I'm sure just like how BVI people see other Caribbean people the UK sees the BVI and they ain't the same color always remember that. Yall want to get rid of both the British and the "Island" people but what's left? Virgins that are clueless about the world. Good luck persuading the crown to treat yall better.

You all don't listen. The BVI is too small to fight the UK for any type of benefit or right. The OTs must get together and speak with one voice. Only then will the UK listen. But you have to get that from a consultant to act right?

Why complain when we have an option? Independence is the way out of this mess. When you are a man and can no longer abide by the rules in your your parent's house you know it is time to leave and find somewhere for yourself pure and simple. Equality for whom? That word is problematic here in the Virgin Islands. Just think about the different nationalities here having the same rights as those of B.V. Islanders. Some people would have to be treated as second class citizens and it is fair to say we know which.

    Accountability is not racism.
The BVI can enjoy a lot of freedoms and respect from the crown, it is no secret.
Isn’t the best respect earned by showing responsibility? Should not fiscal responsibility at least be attempted first?
Everyone knows the Economic benefits of being a OT far outweighs That of independence.
So is the decision based on accounting or arrogance?

Vampires nervous biting their finger nails at the sound of the word independence. The locals will cow when they are presented with the nonsense list high school wall pier park and the rest of the petty rubbish. Do you have any real clue what your grand parents endured at the hands of the British? Do you realize that there are strategies in place to keep us tied to this same type of treatment. Relegare means to bind or tie back it is also the root of the word religion. Unless and until we as a people can pass this mental boundary we will not be able to handle our own affairs. It will be too easy for us to get got so don't jump in the water if you can't swim.

Either VI residents being treated by UK as second class citizens or step children or there is racism in the VI is not earth shattering news. The UK from the birth of Slavery has always treated VI residents as second class citizens. They were a special class of people, not British citizens but British subjects. The 2002 BNA confirmed citizenship on OT citizens yet the equality is lacking. The Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has clearly demonstrated that the UK does not give a rat’s @$$ about VI residents. Government requesting assistance for Covid-19 impacted workers, the workers in essence were told to eat cake as Queen Mary Antoinette told her subjects.

In regards to racism, it has always been in the VI. The plantation and slavery were based on racism. And modern day racists are coming into the VI and bringing their nasty beliefs and practicing it. It is festering and some Uncle Thoms are enabling them in practicing and spreading it. The solution to arresting the racism is not a constitutional review. The community must take a no nonsense approach to racial discrimination and prejudice. People coming into the VI either as visitors or workers must be put on notice that racism is not practice in the VI. Violators should be shamed and put out the territory. Uncle Thoms too should be shamed. Racists should not be welcomed into the VI. And uneasy should be the head that wears the racist crown.

Your independence fantasy is a rational place to end up when you use the discourse of other post-colonia nations, but you forget one thing: we are too small to play in the big wide world. That's not to insult BVIslanders, our abilities, talents etc. It's just a numbers game. We don't have a large enough population. We don't have enough land area. We don't have a large enough economy for our own currency. We are completely vulnerable to any kind of physical, economic, or other attack by external parties that might wish to harm or exploit us. It IS possible that we might one day pull together the greatest basketball team in the world, win soccer's World Cup, etc. but looking at the numbers this seems unlikely because our population pool is just not big enough. Same applies with all other areas - economic, health, education, etc etc. Just as now, we would continue to produce numerous exceptional individuals, some with world class talent, but we simply don't have the population size to produce enough of the brainpower and skills we will need. That's one problem. And then we get onto the fact that everyone in authority is likely to be related by family and friendship loyalties, meaning institutions will simply not function with fairness and impartiality. That raises questions of governance and exactly how we approach that. Maybe having the UK there as an external backup and check/balance - however inconsistent that might be - is our best way to stay stable and avoid the old issues of hunger, societal collapse, kleptocracy etc.?

i am an avid supporter of the Premier and his team. but i do think it is wrong to draw parallel to the death recently of George Floyd jr by refering to giving "Virgin Islands the opportunity to breathe and to truly lift their heads up."
stop feeding off the back of this tragic event to make a point. If Sir you are saying that the UK is choking the BVI to death.......wilfully......heartlesly and do nothing what so ever to help the BVI then you are wrong.

The BVI chokes itself with its unchecked corruption...its outward hatred of down island people and the growing evidence of hatred towards people of differnt colour.

The BVI is sadly and rapidly becoming a place of hate.......a country who welcome you if yiu have value..but once that worth runsout..you are disguarded without feeling or remorse. yearly we welcome tourists...predominately white...yet openly talk about not wanting them around......it is so very hypocritical and sad....the BVI has become a society of open hatred.............
and before you ask....i am a man of colour...I am white.

In June 2007,we got a new Constitution, and for the first time,we got fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual, and one of these rights is 'protection from discrimination'.
In the BVI,the fact of becoming a belonger dont change how born here citizens feel about you, they still see you as an islandman and treat you like an islandman,so what needs to change in the Constitution?
