PALESTINA ESTATE, Tortola, VI - Cultural icon and former legislator Eileene L. Parsons, OBE says as a female of a different generation in the Virgin Islands, she is now embarrassed at what the Emancipation Festival has become, particularly the parade.

“Let me first say, I know I am of a different generation and what is happening now, I know I honestly can't relate to and especially knowing what we started out as, and I was a part of what started out and seeing what is happening now.”

Ms Parsons was at the time a guest on the July 30, 2023, edition of Real Talk with Karia J. Christopher when she voiced her disapproval of how the festival parade has evolved, particularly the costumes involved in the parade.

Feathers & Flesh in VI

“Years ago, a reporter in Trinidad writing in a Trinidad newspaper, say Trinidad Carnival had become nothing but feathers and flesh. This was a Trinidad reporter… Trinidad Carnival has become nothing but feathers and flesh. This is what has happened to us,” she said.

Ms Parsons said the VI is no longer portraying a festival as it was and recalled being in Rio de Janeiro for carnival there as well as experiencing Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

“The young ladies they have on practically nothing and this is what we are doing, and this is not what we the old people in 1954 wanted to see. We wanted to see something that speaks of festival, the emancipation that our ancestors came out of when it was proclaimed August 1st, 1834.”

'I am embarrassed" - She said

Ms Parsons added that as a female of a different generation, she is now embarrassed of the state of affairs in the VI as it relates to the festival.

“I am honestly embarrassed, honest to God. I am embarrassed by what I am seeing on Road Town street.

“Three weeks ago. I went to my hairdresser on Wednesday and a lady in there said Ms P I was talking about you last night. I say what did I do now? She said nothing Miss P, but I saw some costumes that going to be in the parade this year and I said this year Ms P will faint away,” she related.

“It is nothing more than two little dots for the breast and a triangle for in front, that’s it,” Ms Parsons said.

Whilst this woman is a has been loud mouth craving attention and keen to say anything controversial - she is right about the BVI festival which is a cheap, tatty display of large amounts of excess flesh, young girls simulating sex, and very poor organisation.
Everybody who can afford to leaves for the whole week, or longer - and the BVI is the only country in the Caribbean where it is cheaper to buy flights to the Island for festival than it is to buy flights to leave - the population votes with its feet.
Let's just scrap festival next year - it is such a waste of money.

It was worse when she was in charge of festival and there was no accountability of the public funds.

Every year we go through this and the majority of residents are NOT in favor of these kinds of costumes.. I am truly of the same opinion as Ms P. I am ALWAYS saying SEPARATE the two. HAVE the Festival and later on or before have a carnival. They ARE NOT THE SAME. I am sooooo mad. I have stopped going to the parade ever since my children were around 10 and 12 or so that's over 10 yrs ago.. I refuse to stand on the side of the road watching at the sexual gyrations with my husband and my children. I was trying to raise them a certain way. Up to this day they would never go to a parade. Thank God they have chosen wives that are honorable. BVI we have to do better. Stop importing other people culture. If the expats (and I am one) want to experience carnival let them go to their country.

What else you expect? The BVI as a territory is in spiritual slavery and the devil is our master. We celebrate emancipation from race slavery yet we are still in bondage. We choose to spend 250k on a free devil worshipping party so close to the festival season instead of building airport or some other infrastructure that desperately needs attention. We spend more time worshipping the devil these days that we forget that God is a jealous God. When things get bad, that is when we choose to remember there is a God. GOD is nothing to the BVI but a genie in a bottle to grant us our desires should we choose to communicate with him. This territory continues to sin so being half naked in the streets became the new culture. God have mercy on us.

I see from the last comments, these people were not raised with RESPECT or DECENCY! Mrs. Parsons is correct! In the beginning years ago, the festival was so respectful. We wore costumes that showed tradition and pride in our emancipation and culture. These nasty vulgar outfits and young people gyrating around are embarrassing and demonic. Never would women and men allow themselves to be seen as whores and tramps. I no longer for years now have gone to the parades, and little children's parents allow them to stand there and watch this. It breaks my heart and I wonder who allowed it to come to this. These young children imitate what they see and their parents should be better than that and not allow them to see it! SAD!

The first time I saw this half nakedness it did bother me, but as I get older and realize the low value a woman place on herself become a stigma of vulgarity , I step out of there with my family during the festival.

I saw a woman photo in one phone company, I took a photo and try to find out who in Gender affairs and those organizations that i should send it to, because it is time all the women look back and see how this affect them. Yesterday, one guy told me that when he decided to get a wife none of them ladies he will choose. I believe the display by some company of the festival attire needs to be fixed. Stop it! As this is what you think of your women staff, when you see noting wrong with it. And to think cheaply about women is a violation of the moral conscious laws.

This is what happens when you give up your culture to accept that of those you let in to your country. Some of the things they cannot do in their country, they display here and nothing is done about it. It is time to screen persons trying to be citizens or belonged of this country. Mind you there are decent people who come, but lots of who have no decency or morals get in as it seems as free for all here.

With all due respect, I see blaming others as a cop out. We keep pointing fingers at the people who come in - yes they have influence - but what are we Virgin Islanders doing to highlight, teach, and preserve what is ours? Not much.

The BVI has developed a greedy addiction. That has killed the BVI. There is no reason for this much paid night, after getting a million from Govt. Then banning live streaming. I remember being a part of the company before we have all this technology and our major concern was how can we get the people at home anf abroad, those who are old and sick to be apart of our/ there culture. We decided to get JTV, Zrod and ZBVI to carry tbe show live. Now we have tbe technology to reach everyone every where we are putting hand cuff on in.. We going backwards..

Ms. P is spot on! If we as BVislanders cannot define who we are as a people, then someone else will define us for us! We are so heavily influenced by American/other Caribbean culture that we now have no specific identity. I ask our leaders to make OUR history

Ms. P, it is a generational thing. Each generation is going to do their thing. If this generation is fortunate to reach your age, they will be lamenting too about the younger generation (s). It will happen. We had our fun and they will have theirs. We just need to make sure the current Gen is grounded and give them wings so that they can fly and land safely and securely. Bring it down a likle Ms..P, all will be well. Next week everyone will be back to the hustle and bustle, stressing about life’s pressure and trying to live and take care of their families. The Emancipation is a just a brief respite, etc.

Have to, no, MUST agree with this one of our last remaining icons Madam Parsons. I truly would like to see something that speaks to the idea of freedom. Not just freedom to be vulgar. Maybe depictions of what it must have been like to learn that you're now free. I don't have all the answers but let's hold some town meetings. - engage the schools in competition, the churches, government departments to demonstrate how they might have looked and operated prior to and after emancipation. Chances our people weren't jumping around naked and foolishly.

I don't know when it was started, but I notice that Barbados has separated Emancipation Day, which is August 1st, from Kadooment Day, which is the first Monday in August. When they coincide, Kadooment Day is shifted to August 2nd. On August 1st the activities focus on Emancipation. Perhaps one of our three holidays could be shifted to August 1st.

Let's stop blaming other cultures for what happens in OUR country! IF WE CREATE AND ENFORCE THE STANDARDS WE WANT TO SEE AT FESTIVAL, THEN THAT IS WHAT THE EXPERIENCE WILL BE!

The same can be said for every other aspect of life here. We have no standards for ourselves so it is the Wild West and we start to point fingers instead of seeing where we can create the BVI we want. We BVIslanders do not respect our own laws and customs but we expect that ex-pats will.

Festival is what it is today because we have allowed it to be this way, in our country! Decide what we want Festival to portray and get the Committee to enforce it so that the participants will stay in line. If we want a carnival, have a carnival. If we want Festival to be a celebration of emancipation and a culture, then make it that. And if we want both, separate them and ensure that each is what it is meant to be!

you looking for a scapegoat ? did the expats hold a gun to anybody's head ? the lady is only telling it like it is / how can you expect anyone to respect your culture if you don't have any respect for it ? / ( 1 ) there should be a real cultural festival with fungi bands ( only ) that potrays the original art form of the celebration of the emancipation of our ancestors / if you truly love and respect your ancestors , then that culture should be preserved and displayed with pride and i believe tourist will be delighted to come and witness a natural cultural festival thats portrayed in original tradition . and ( 2 ) choose another day for the youths to do their thing .

The lost culture these seniors speak is only lost because they did a poor job of passing it on to the younger generations, perhaps the narrative of the seniors should not be Festival gone to the dogs and be we have failed our younger generation. These seniors keep the knowledge and culture to themselves and only reference it to shame the younger generations they should have been raising.

witness what some of their wannabe innocent school children does be carrying on in tphep pp streets , some of them would faint / and as I said before , if the parents don't get their school pchildren do a blood test to know what some of them are on , then they will be in for a rude awakening •¿•
