CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI- The late former Governor of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) Mr Charles Wesley Turnbull was laid to rest on Saturday, August 13, 2022, following a state funeral at Christchurch Methodist Church in St Thomas, USVI.

Mr Turnbull, a [British] Virgin Islands (VI) Belonger, died on Sunday, July 3, 2022, in Washington, DC at the age of 87.

He was elected governor in 1998 as a Democrat and went on to serve two four-year terms.

VI delegation attends funeral

Among the many persons attending the state funeral was Premier of the Virgin Islands Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who led a small delegation that included Deputy Premier and Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) and Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office Carolyn E. Stoutt-Igwe.

Among those giving tributes in person were USVI Governor Albert A. Bryan Jr, Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach, Delegate to Congress Stacey E. Plaskett and former Speaker of the VI House of Assembly Julian Willock, who was a close friend of the late Turnbull.

The former USVI governor was buried at the Smith Bay Eastern Cemetery followed by a repast at Fort Christian.

    A speech could come from the lips or the heart. It could be given to esteem it promote oneself or to honor others. Whichever way you put it the Former Speaker knows how to give a speech that grips any group of people. I am not surprised when he delivers.
