ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Our newsroom can confirm that three persons are now officially charged by police in relation to the murder of Trumayne J. Daway.

Moments ago the other two young men, who this news site had first and accurately reported were arrested, were officially charged.

They are Vernon Bernard, 26, a Dominica national who resides in Purcell Estate on Tortola and local resident Rafael Harrigan, 27, also of Purcell Estate.

Bernard is charged for the murder of Mr Daway and unlawful possession of a firearm while Harrigan is charged for possession of a firearm.

Police Information Officer Diane L. Drayton also confirmed the latest arrests in a press release late this afternoon, March 4, 2018.

Earlier today, police charged 21 year old female Maybelline Rodriquez with the murder of Mr Daway.

RVIPF is working- Mathews

Police Commissioner Michael B. Mathews, who just returned our call placed earlier this morning, confirmed our story. He also added, “I recognised the serious concerns from the community regarding the recent shootings in the Territory.”

Mr Mathews, who is under pressure to demonstrate some progress in crime reduction, said “whilst we cannot always publicise what we are doing, my detectives are committed to tracking down those who ruthlessly choose to kill and resort to violence in our Territory.”

He said he was grateful for the support of the public “as we continue to investigate the reckless and futile homicides in the Territory.”

The three defendants, Messers Harrigan and Bernard and Ms Rodriquez, will appear before a Magistrate on Tuesday March 6, 2018 under heavy police protection. It is not clear which Attorney/s they have retained in their defense.

The Virgin Islands has recorded three murders so far for 2018, with all three happening in the month of February.

A deal and deportation? She needs to do her time. It is not justice if she gets to walk away without her spending her fair share of time behind bars.

Banishment to the DR with no return to VI would be worse than the siesta at Hotel Balsum . Assuming her prison sentence will be a couple decades, savings for the VI would be tremendous.

You are so wrong, Local and veteran politician Vernon E. Malone was the best Commissioner the force ever had. You Johny come lately talking piss. He had a detention rate of 68 percent in solving crimes. Plus those were the best years of the organization, all is know is pure oppression and victimization against locals. Barry say you will hear the onfong soon.

a detention rate, LOL, u mean he got alot of detention in school?.
    • tretretrete (05/03/2018, 10:00) Like (9) Dislike (0) Reply
When Mr Malone headed the force he was the first to be educated at such a high level . He created a culture of training and education where when he left they were officers with Law degrees and Bachelors and persons who were highly trained. However this was kicked aside by the powers at be .

Unfortunately we are living in a period where the BVI's eggs are coming home to roost. It is always nice when we are sowing wrong but when reaping time comes around it is bitter sweet. The police force has been a political foot ball been kicked around from both powers at be and now that the results of such action has come home to roost everybody is daunted on what to do.

The disturbing fact about this case and others before and maybe after is that if these three people are convicted in about 3 to 5 yrs they will be out driving around with the prison guards or out working during the day and maybe in ten those who are not from here will be deported. We have a system of incarceration that does not bear punishment and this is what is help failing our country. The politics again has failed. We need these young people to know that if you do crimes there is a housing of strict punishment awaiting.

I heard when the prisoners in St. Lucia were complaining it is alleged that some of our leaders were trying to transfer them other places where the conditions were more favorable.

Mr. Bernard has graduated from being a thief to alleged murderer. He has burglarized the police station and many innocent people. The law has been very lenient on him and now he has allegedly been involved in a crime that has taken a life. Our judges need to stop being so forgiving on these criminals who have no remorse for their actions. These prisoners need to serve hard time instead of sitting in a cell playing PlayStation 4 and updating their Facebook pages. Make our prison a place for rehabilitation. Make our prisoners earn the tax dollars used to feed them daily.

He should have been deported a long time ago. When you come to a man's country and canot behave yourself, its time to go!
These are the tough and logical decisions countries around the world must make. And yes a few of ours have been sent back as well.

Then on the flip side you have decent law abiding expats here for 15 - 20 years and we are ready to send them back just because they have been displaced by an act of God. Give them a chance to catch themselves. Get rid of the undesirables like this unremorseful thief. If he was from here we would have no choice but to keep him, but someone please tell me what we waited for - oh I forgot, for him to murder someone.

Even in the schools they hang out with other Spanish speaking students. They have their own communities here in the BVI.
