FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI — The [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) is alerting the St Croix community and businesses of the importance of checking all currency being presented to them following several reports the department received of counterfeit money circulating at the Crucian Christmas Festival Village.

The VIPD said the fake bills are being provided to Festival Village booth owners as real money, and the department has provided certain markers to help identify the sham cash.

According to the police department, a common "red flag" to look out for is the actual "feel" of the bill. "It can be easily identifiable depending on the quality of the counterfeit," the VIPD said.

"This alone often alerts employees to the fake currency. Some counterfeit bills have passed the commonly used marker test. Oftentimes the counterfeit bills being passed are done so at busy times of the business where an employee may be distracted."

The VIPD's Economic Crime Unit has launched an investigation into the matter, and is advising booth owners and businesses, as well as the public to be vigilant and examine the money being presented to them.

This should be a crime as serious as Arm Robbery or man slaughter , they are taking people stuff with a smile paying with their fake money and still collecting change in good in the people good money....This is much, much more than stealing or Robbery and should be treated very seriously like a bad deadly contagious virus that must not allowed to spread. Life in Prison..

Fake people, Fake Money, they been getting away with it for a long time, years ago I remember one individual came to payless shoe store to buy shoes and attempted to pay with fake 20 dollar bills he pulled out from strapped bills like he just came from the bank....LOL he was the first customer early in the morning as soon the store opened.......when told the bills were fake after using the currency pen he calmly left the store....

Make sure the business owners look at the bills carefully. Some of the bills clearly state "For Entertainment Use Only". People are always trying to get over on the poor small businesses, who can lose so much of their small income.
