USVI: 26-y-o man killed after bike strikes truck & oncoming vehicle
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St. Thomas, USVI- A 26-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon following a collision involving his bike, a truck and another vehicle on Weymouth Rhymer Highway near New Hernhut, according to the V.I. Police Department.
The 911 Emergency Call Center received a report at approximately 2:54 p.m. of an accident involving a truck and a bike. Authorities were also told that the bike was on fire and that its rider had been ejected. Responding officers found an unresponsive man lying on the ground near the New Hernhut sign along the highway.
A preliminary investigation determined that the bike collided with the truck before striking a vehicle traveling in the opposite lane and subsequently catching fire, police said.
The rider sustained life-threatening injuries and died at the scene. He was later identified by his next of kin as Darlin Arias, 26.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by the VIPD Traffic Investigation Bureau. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the bureau at 340-774-2211.
