ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The [British] Virgin Islands, weakened by the absence of a few of its regular players due to red cards and injuries, battled hard against a determined Dominica but eventually fell to the visitors 1-2 in their CONCACAF Nations League match at A.O. Shirley Grounds today, November 16, 2023.

A win for the home side would have seen them top Group C of League C and promoted to League B next season.

Opportunities for VI

And the Virgin Islands had an opportunity to take the lead in the 10th minute when Tyler Forbes made a good run down the left flank and had a clear shot for goal but he was only able to find goalkeeper Glenson Prince with a soft shot.

Another opportunity came in the 34th minute when Luka E. Chalwell headed the ball just over the crossbar from a throw.

Dominica also had a chance in the 20th minute when one of its players took a shot from close range but hit the post.

Goals

The score was untroubled at half-time; however, Dominica silenced the home crowd when Audel Laville took advantage of some sloppy defending to find the back of the nets in the 52nd minute.

The home crowd came back alive in the 63rd minute when T´Sharne Gallimore dribbled a couple of defenders at the top of the box and fired the ball into the goal.

Celebrations were short-lived; however, as Dominica regained the lead five minutes later when Eustace Marshall put the ball past Daniel Gilford in the 63rd minute.

The VI boys would battle hard for an equalizer, with substitute Azarni Callwood especially causing trouble for the Dominicans; however, the visitors held firm to ensure the win and a return to League B next season.

The VI team was missing several players for the big game, including Skipper Troy Kavon Caesar and Carlos Septus, who were on suspension owing to their picking up red cards in previous games.

‘It was a good effort’- Coach Kiwomya

National coach Christopher M. Kiwomya said the VI boys put in a brave effort, all things considered.

“Listen, the team we played out there, we were missing four or five players, but it was a good effort, if the four or five players were there it would have been a different game, but I can’t fault the players,” Kiwomya said.

“I think overall they [Dominica] were just a bit more stronger than us. We didn’t have enough quality around the edge of the box,” the VI coach added.

Asked what the positives for him were, despite the defeat, Mr Kiwomya said, “The players fighting to the end. You know, it’s only a small island but we are fighting bigger than we are supposed to be.”

The national coach also said it’s the first defeat in four games for the VI and the team can build on its successes, and “keep moving forward.”

VI seeking crucial win against Dominica @ A.O. Shirley Grounds today

- Victory would see VI advance to League B next season

In a matter of hours from now, the [British] Virgin Islands will come up against Dominica hoping to capitalise on home turf and crowd advantage at A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground in CONCACAF Nations League Group C action today, Thursday, November 16, 2023.

The game, which could be a historic one, is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

A win for the Virgin Islands could see them win Group C and advance to League B next season.

According to CONCACAF; however, Dominica can make a return to League B should they come away with the full three points from Road Town, making this one a must-watch.

While a draw would still keep the VI ahead in the table, it would shift the advantage to Dominica, who face Turks and Caicos Islands to close out the group.

VI’s players to watch

The Virgin Islands will rely on Luka E. Chalwell and Tyler Forbes in the attack. Chalwell has three goals on the campaign, while Forbes has been one of the key playmakers with four assists.

The home side will also rely on their skipper Kavon Troy Caesar to steady the defence.

Dominica will counter with Troy Jules and Briel Thomas. Jules has two goals and an assist, while Thomas has a pair of goals, including a score in the first meeting between these two sides, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

      @what

What are you trying to say?
This game only proves that they need that one person (TROY CEASAR), who got two yellow cards which equals a red.

Had he not done what he did in Turks to obtain that yellow card, the BVI team would have been out a long time but we came home with a draw.

It is just unfortunate that the boys did not execute to keep us on top of the division, but they have the potential to go far.

Also, the main player on this team is Mr. Caesar, who keeps the team together, so yeah, with him being out did affect the team.
