DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – In his first Motion brought before the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA) since becoming a legislator, Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr The Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) successfully gained the full support of the House to have the official Territorial Song replace ‘God Save the Queen’ when VI athletes win medals at regional and international sporting events.

Historic Day – Dr Wheatley

Speaking at the continuation of the Fourteenth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fourth House today, September 17, 2020, at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom, Dr Wheatley thanked all for their contribution, including the stellar performance of VI’s athletes in paving the way for what he called a “historic day.”

Adding to the debates ahead of the passage of the Motion, Opposition Leader, Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) called the Motion well needed, while pledging his full support. “It is something that all of us in this Honourable House, and all of us in this Territory should be absolutely proud of,” he said.

Hon Penn also noted that the official Territorial Song 'Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands' instils a sense of national pride in Virgin Islanders and will go a long way in supporting VI’s athletes.

Song will add an immense sense of pride – Hon Penn

“Along with the support of this song being played, when they are on the podium, it's going to being an immense sense of pride to all of us as a Territory,” he said, while commending Virgin Islanders, Ayana S. Hull and her brother Kareem Nelson Hull for composing the song.

Deputy Speaker and Territorial At-Large Member, Hon Neville A. Smith (AL), Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), along with Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) also pledged their full support of the resolution today.

The Motion was passed shortly after noon at 12:13 pm, receiving the full support of the House of Assembly.

Dr Wheatley said the move comes at the intersection of national pride and a legacy of sports in the VI, noting that he is looking forward to hearing the song played for the first time when a VI athlete scores a medal.

HoA debates Motion for Territorial Song to play @ regional & int sporting events

In a Motion moved by Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr The Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) last evening, September 22, 2020, the House of Assembly (HoA) debated that the official Territorial Song of the Virgin Islands should formally replace ‘God Save the Queen’ at international sporting events.

Song written by Virgin Islanders

The Official Territorial Song 'Oh, Beautiful Virgin Islands' will play when VI athletes win medals.

According to Dr Wheatley, the process to have the song replace the anthem was one that took several steps.

“At the International Olympic Committee, permission has to be sought from them for it to happen and the international Olympic committee said that is not a problem at all,” Hon Wheatley said.

Ahead of that, he said the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) originally made the request but for the process to complete, it had to first go to Cabinet and now the House of Assembly (HoA).

VI/UK relations creates longing for local pride – Hon Wheatley

According to Dr Wheatley, the Motion now is especially important at a time when the VI relationship with the UK is one that creates a longing for individuality and pride for the Virgin Islands.

Seconding the Motion was Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), who offered his full support for the Territorial Song to play at various international sports events when VI athletes score medals.

Hon Shereen D. Flax-Charles (AL) said tears will flow when a VI athlete wins a medal, while Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6) also threw her full support beind the initiative, mentioning that the songwriters are from her district.

Legislators pledge support

Other legislators, including Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) and Hon Mark H. Vanterpool (R4), contributed positively to the debate.

The debate on the Motion will continue on Thursday, September 24, 2020, with Opposition Leader Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) yet to take the floor.

‘Oh Beautiful Virgin Islands’

“Oh Beautiful Virgin Islands” originally was composed in 2012 by Virgin Islanders, Ayana S. Hull and her brother, Kareem Nelson Hull.

The song, which was originally arranged by Mr Howard John, was officially adopted as the Territorial Song by resolution of the House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands on July 24, 2012.

As a British Overseas Territory "God Save the Queen" is the VI’s official national anthem.

The rousing, 80-second, orchestral version of the Territorial Song was arranged by Mr Alton A. Bertie, an Elmore Stoutt High School alumnus who graduated in the field of Film Scoring and Song Writing from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA.

It's a sh*t song but OK - the BVI should use it's own anthem.

    Please no.

As a national Athlete I'd like to petition a large but humble no to this act. The song is very long, slightly boring and doesn't exactly motivate or drive us to want to compete. I mean, neither does "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN"but lets just stick to evil we know until better comes.

Well fool, don’t play the whole song. Who said the entire song has to be played. Do you think all of God Save the Queen is played? We are really still some slaves mentally messon.

At LordMax. Have you heard the version to be used for this? It had to be only 30 seconds. God Save the Queen has five verses. Do you think they play the entire thing? Think Up Athlete, please. Don't embarass the BVI with these kind of statements. If you don't like it, that's fair and it's your right but it is the territorial song. What better do you really think will come? Confused by this national athlete though.

I am sure there are more important things. The frustration level of many people is at an all time high. There's the need for improved internet services, removal of the curfew, online school, stimulus packages and the list goes on. The song playing is much to do about nothing.

The version approved by the Olympic committee is about 30 seconds long. most national songs are long. We only here one verse. With Oh Beautiful Virgin Islands, we sing two verses and a chorus. We can do like others and sing one verse only.

No offense but I hate that song. I would be embarrassed to hear that song play. It’s just not a good national anthem. Territorial song .. maybe. Not To represent these island on an international stage.

You present an alternative, let's see if you can get it right. It's not suppose to be an anthem or replace the anthem. It's a song.

As someone who has represented my country many times, I am begging you not to play that song. It’s long, it’s flat, it’s boring... it does the opposite to a national anthem. It actually embarrasses us on the field and doesn’t motivate us whatsoever! Please don’t! God save the queen is better than our national song.
    • @ athletes (23/09/2020, 15:11) Like (10) Dislike (2) Reply
I agree with you. The song of just so bland and boring . It does not belong on the international stage to represent these islands. I would bow my head In embarrassment if I were in a public place and this song came on to represent our athletes. It is not something I am proud of. Please keep “ God save our queen”.

They say ignorance is bliss but what would Yeshua do? He would teach the truth in love. Everyone has a right to freedom of speech but we have seen lately that it is always important to be educated first, then perhaps one can be in a better position to form a valid and relevant opinion that is constructive to the building up of a people, of a nation. For the love of the territory, please be invited to educate yourself: https://youtu.be/626FQD1dw9o

Who is the Government misleading now? The story is not about a popularity contest or a vocalist. It was a about the BVI's territorial song becoming the replacement to the national anthem at sporting events. Deanna was the chosen vocalist. She recorded to melody that was provided to her. She used her talent and she is the recorded voice on the official CD and has been given credit for her vocals there. Do you want her name to be mentioned as the vocalist who made it popular in your mind, each time? These comments are really petty and the authors of the song could really care less. I like Deanna but these comments are silly man. These are all people who really hate to be in this kind of mix up.

We all should know by now that the song "God saves our gracioue queen" has little value to us. It rivals against John 3:16. It is irrevelant at this time to cause distractions from the pressing issues that are far more important. God, has he chosen to could have created the creation in one day. He certainly is not a russian. He did not russ. He worked 6 days, and completed the creation. Because the world's nations are still in fierce battle against covid-19, and they are uncertain of the time when its pressures would ease, why then did our political leader who ofter reminded us that "we are not yet out of the woods" set Dec 1, 2020 as our Country's borders openning day? What is the message is he trying to convey to us. Is he trying to say that it is time to rid ourselve of the woods in us. One bad step can cause a stumble. One bad stumbe can cause a fall. yone bad fall can cause death. let us move forward, making careful step after step. Tread carefully with Godly patient, and faith of that fails not.

I am not from the BVI. But despite the "down Island" rhetoric, I am a BVIslander. Because this is where I live and invest and raise my children. I did not run after Irma, as I saw many do. Including BVIslanders. I remained here, despite many options. But this is home and I had to teach my family that this is home. I have lived here for the past 19 years. I will say that I have listened to the orchestrated version and I am so proud to know that this country's very own territorial song is now being used to represent the territory on such a large scale. It sounds patriotic and as I listen to it, I recite the words to the song, which speak to this land and what it has been through and what it stands for. I commend the Government for this brave move and I encourage all those who live here to celebrate this achievement. And yes, those are our local athletes, for those who had negative things to say about them also.

The US and British national anthem has the same melody. I was born in the US but when to school in the BVI for 6 years. Whenever we had to sing the national anthem I found myself singing "My Country tis of thee" instead of "God Save our gracious Queen". The first time I heard "Oh Beautiful Virgin Islands" tears came to my eyes because it reminded me of the country I love.

The long and short of this nonsense about "Ï don't like this song" saga, is because you all don't like the 2 persons that wrote the song. There is nothing wrong with it, in my opinion. In fact , I love the song a lot better than the alternative. People on a whole complain too much about anything and everything.

That is the whole long and short. And it's two or three malicious persons on this story doing this, not a soul else. When will we ever learn as a people? And we think we are ready for independence. We probably need Her majesty reign long over us for real. This song went though an entire competition and is 8 years since it has been the territorial song. Really?
