ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has taken the responsibility for accidentally removing an infant’s body from the hospital’s morgue and cremating it.

In a press release issued this afternoon, Thursday October 20, 2011 to the media, the BVISHA stated, “An investigation in collaboration with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force revealed that the body was accidentally removed from the morgue and cremated due to a procedural error. Having identified this unprecedented error, measures have been immediately implemented to ensure that there is never a repeat of a similar incident.”

To this end, the release further stated that the BVI Health Services Authority’s board, management and staff deeply regret the tragic loss and expressed their condolences; thoughts and prayers for the wellbeing of the parents and family.

Just last evening October19, 2011, a prayer session was held at the New Life Baptist Church, Duffs Bottom for the Filipino couple who has been going through the horrific ordeal.

Through Bishop John Cline, Virgin Islands News Online was informed that the body of the infant went missing after the mother gave birth on October 9, 2011 but only to learn that she died two hours later as a result of complications. He further stated that the couple informed him that a Pathologist arrived in the Territory last Wednesday, October 12, 2011 to conduct a post mortem, but the body of the infant could not be found at the morgue.

And after several days of searching, he added, the couple was informed on Sunday October 16 by hospital officials that the baby might have been cremated by accident.

It is alleged that when the parents asked for the ashes they were informed that the hospital did not have it because it may have been thrown away.

I hate that people are taking this and making it a political issue. What does a family in mourning because their baby has disappeared and there is nothing left for them to do but deal with it, have to do with politics. Someone messing up at the hospital has nothing to do with who's running the country. It has to do with who's running the morgue. I wish people would take this family pain into consideration and stop the nonsense comments. This is a tragedy. I only hope someday they can find closure and peace. Good luck!

Stop misquoting people, that is not what SHE said. She released a statement from the Health Service Authority and not from HER. There is a difference!

The fact that the body is missing, perhaps burnt (not cremated), is a reprehensible act by the hospital. First off the hospital should cease and desist from disposing of bodies and body parts (all those amputated toes, feet, legs, fingers) at the garbage dump and PROCURE A CREMATORIUM for the purpose of cremating bodies and body parts. As there is open burning of garbage and the new incinerator not yet online, only God knows how many body parts have been thrown to the dogs and cats at Pockwood Pond. We all need to know the facts: there is not one single crematorium in the BVI; neither at either of the funeral homes or the hospitals, so we could easily rule out that the missing baby has been cremated! Furthermore, the Peebles Hospital in particular needs a commission of inquiring in to the standard practices and procedures it undertakes, especially when it comes to the handling of patients, and if and when a patient becomes a corpse. In particular, the hospital's chief of security should not be so closely affiliated with the popular funeral home because it so often happens that sad news hits the streets before the immediate family relative is even informed. It is high time the hospital gets brought up on its ill practices! Afterall my fellow Virgin Islanders, a baby represents the start of life of who would become a productive national of a country. An expired new born baby should not be treated as trash, placed in a bag and left on the floor for someone unawares to dispose of a human being mistakenly for trash! I now rest my case.

You must be close to the unpopular funeral home. The hospitals chief of security is not now nor has he ever been in any way employeed in any fashion by any of the funeral homes. Perhaps you as the watcher should watch all of the nurses on the funeral homes payroll and the funeral home owner who walks the halls of peebles in "scrubs". You need to rest more than your case.
