ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially began today, June 1, 2021, and, fortunately, there are no storms in sight for at least the next five days, the National Hurricane Center has said.

As it has in several recent years, the season got a head-start: Tropical Storm Ana formed May 22, 2021, spinning harmlessly in the Atlantic for about two days before petering out.

The next storm name is Bill, followed by Claudette, Danny and Elsa. The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season officially ends November 30, 2021.

The eastern Pacific hurricane season officially began May 15, 2021. Two storms have formed there: Andres and Blanca.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center is forecasting a likely range of 13 to 20 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher) is expected.

'Be Ready & Stay Ready'- Premier Fahie

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) urged the people of the Virgin Islands to do their part "to BE READY and STAY READY" for what is forecast to be an active hurricane season.

"We pray that we would not see any storms on our shores, but we should also BE READY and STAY READY to work together and lend our strength to our friends and neighbours. King Solomon’s sage advice speaks to us in these times: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves; And a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

"With that in mind, please do what you can to be a strong support to your family and community – Review and update your emergency plans and emergency supply kits as necessary; take steps to protect your property by ensuring that you have adequate structural protection and that there are not unnecessary hazards around your home or business. For those who are able, I would also encourage you to reach out to the vulnerable members of your extended family or village to see what assistance may be needed," the Premier encouraged in a statement today, June 1, 2021.
