The critical importance of great customer service can never be underscored, as customer service officers are the first line of contact of businesses and can either make or break a company.

Our Young Professional, Akeem M. Joseph, holds such a critical position and it can be said he is a ‘right fit’ for the job and no doubt an asset to the company. Most customers of Caribbean Cellular Telephone (CCT), who would have been attended to by Akeem, can attest to his excellent customer service ability.

Akeem is a Business Sales Executive responsible for managing all prepaid Top Up vendors (locations) and outdoor promotions at CCT.

“I find joy in assisting people”

Our Young Professional began working with CCT in April 2017 and, with his exceptional customer service qualities, which include humility, charisma and willingness to learn, it came as no surprise that within a year he was promoted to Business Sales Executive.

“I was always the type to find joy in assisting people, especially with the use of technology. Ever since I was given the opportunity to be a part of this company [CCT], I’ve grown a passion for customer service.”

The famous Chinese philosopher Confucius said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” The passion of Akeem makes this quote ring true, as excellent customer service is hardly “work” for Akeem when providing customer satisfaction is what he enjoys most about his job.

“When customers come with queries or service issues, I ensure that they leave happy and satisfied, this in turn makes me feel that I have accomplished my goal and fulfilled my duty. My ability to understand customers, trends and build relationships with my vendors has allowed me to execute my job role effectively.”

Besides that very important responsibility, Akeem said he enjoys the opportunity to go around on a daily basis venturing for new prepaid vendors as well as visiting and checking up on the current CCT vendors.

Facing unhappy customers is something any customer service personnel in any company would have to experience; however, it is the response that makes the world of difference.

“Some of the challenges I face are aggravated or upset customers. Overcoming this challenge takes patience as well as understanding. I try my best to express empathy and do whatever it takes to resolve the problem.”

Schooling & ambitions

Akeem is a proud product of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School, where he graduated from in 2009 and the Elmore Stoutt High School, where he graduated in 2014.

Our Young Professional then enrolled in the Computer Studies Programme at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) and has plans to further his studies in the field of business sales, “giving the exposure and things I’ve learned from my current job.”

One of his other career goals is to become an entrepreneur, “providing a different but essential product or service in the BVI.”

Hobbies & Inspiration

Akeem shared that his hobbies are sailing as well as socialising. “I’ve become a very social person so I try to use that to the best of my ability.”

Asked who are the persons that inspire him, Akeem said his parents. “They motivate me and remind me to never give up, to focus on my goal, trust in God, keep the faith and reach for the stars.

“My friends are also inspirational because of the amount of support I get from them in anything I do.”

Advice to young people

Invited to leave some friendly advice to young people pursuing their career ambitions, Akeem said they should aim high but start low, celebrate and keep going.

“Make sure you’re passionate about it. Don’t just do it because it’s what your family or friends want you to do.

Our Young Professional this week was also kind enough to share one of his favourite quotes to our readers and young persons: “Don’t give up on your dreams, or your dreams will give up on you,” a quote by the legendary college basketball coach, John R. Wooden.
