ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Portland State Vikings Sr. Dominique Maloney has one of her indoor season’s goals out of the way and ex-Viking Karene King has a new 60m best, but this weekend the local youngsters will prove they are not far behind their more illustrious peers.

On Friday January 18, 2013, at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Maloney took down Femi Kehinde’s 400m school record that had been on the books since 2006, when she ran a personal best of 55.72 seconds. Her mark is also the leading time in the Big Sky Conference.

Also at the Cherry and Silver Invitational, former Portland State Standout Karene King ran a personal best of 7.46 seconds in the 60m dash to place second behind her former teammate Geronne Black, who won in 7.36. In the prelims King lowered her best from last year’s 7.49 to 7.47. She then went on to win the 200m with her fastest opener ever of 24.02 seconds.

Also over the weekend, Keron Stoute won the High Jump in his 2013 Indoor season debut at the Florida Gators Invitational in Gainesville, Florida. Stoute cleared the bar at 2.03m (6’8”).  Quarter miler Ashley Kelly, in her first post collegiate race, ran 7.64 seconds in the 60m dash at the Illinois Illini Indoor Classic on Saturday, to open her 2013 season.

Morgan State Bears Sr. Britney Wattley had a very busy weekend of competition. On Friday, she ran the 60 and 200m at the Great Dane Classic in New York, and then competed in the same events on Saturday at the Terrapin Invitational in Maryland. She ran 7.79 in the 60m prelims and 7.74 in the final at the Great Dane Classic and 25.40 in the 200m. At the Terrapin’s Invitational, she recorded marks of 7.90 to win her heat and 7.88 for fifth in the final of the 60m and 26.11 in the 200m.

Khari Herbert Jr., the National Youth 400m record holder, will be competing in the Jimmy Cranes Invitational on Saturday. Herbert Jr. is a Sr. at American Heritage High School Florida.

The locally based athletes won’t be far behind as on Friday January 25, 2013 the BVIAA will be hosting its 2nd Development Meet of the year, the Tahesia Harrigan-Scott Classic on the Monod track and over 200 athletes have already registered to participate

This Meet will be special as it will start at 5.30pm and conclude under lights with the organizers hoping the new format will draw a bumper crowd.

The following weekend, the athletes will be given a once in a lifetime chance to attend the Tahesia Harrigan-Scott Speed and Technical Camp.

According to the event organisers, “there will be different workshops, including nutrition, massage therapy and chiropractic care as well as presentations by the BVI Athletic Federation, and local clubs in the morning session of the camp.”

The nutrition workshop will be conducted by Stephanie Russ-Penn, who is a professor at HLSCC and no stranger to track and field. She is a former 800m runner and has played a fundamental role in the development of the Athletics Federation as General Secretary.

Joshua Johnson aka J.J Johnson of Synergy Massage and Bodyworks will be conducting the massage therapy workshop. He is also a former 100m (9.95) and 200m (19.88) sprinter from the USA.

Parents who are interested in having your child examined are asked to contact the organisers at harrigan-scottstc@hotmail.com. There will be select participants (whose parents have given consent) from the audience to take part in his demonstration.

One guest speaker is Coach Harvey Glance, who coaches Kirani James (400m Olympic Champion) and is also a former record holder in the 100m.

The technical session will be in the afternoon and includes modern drills, block work, long jump, running technique, hurdle drills, weights, and throws.

2004 Olympic Games Long Jump Champion, 2009 and 2011 World Outdoor Championships competitor, Dwight Phillips will be sharing his experiences and interacting with the athletes. According to the Camp’s Facebook page, 2012 Olympic Games and 2011 World Championships 400 metre Champion Kirani James will also be gracing our shores.

The Camp is scheduled for February 2, 2013.
