ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our news centre is that the Director of the BVI Red Cross, Ms Stacy C. Lloyd, is tipped to become the new Labour Commissioner.

Sources in the Governor’s Office familiar with the matter have told our newsroom that she was recommended by the Public Service Commission (PSC) a few months ago but the appointment may be stuck in the Governor’s Office because of some pushback in certain areas.

The Department of Labour and Workforce Development is now a subject under the portfolio of the Premier, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), with the Ministry of Financial Services, Economic Development and Digital Transformation.

What would be her duties?

Currently, Mr Mervin D. Hastings is the acting Labour Commissioner following the retirement last year of Mrs Michelle A. McLean.

If Ms Lloyd becomes the Labour Commissioner, her duties will include promoting good Labour/Management practices at workplaces to ensure stable and harmonious labour relations between employers and employees and protecting the rights, wages, working conditions, safety, health and welfare of workers through enforcement of the Virgin Islands Labour Laws.

The Department of Labour and Workforce Development is located at the Ashley Ritter Building in the Capital City Road Town, with an out office on Virgin Gorda.

With her background she should understand that simply making a list of unemployed locals and forcing them on employers is not the answer. We need proper ongoing training/monitoring for our people to ensure that they not only get a job, but are READY for meaningful employment and in some cases even start their own businesses. We have done our people a gave disservice over the years forcing them into places where they cannot function all in the name of political nonsense. A proper full on training center is needed for hospitality workers ASAP if you want to reduce the number of work permits being issued in this area.

What the $%#^ is wrong with Virgin Islanders in key decision making positions. All you guys and girls do is keep giving away this small territory. Of all the well-educated men and women in this community you all could not find 1 not 1 of us to fill this position. Lets go back to the drawing board and get this thing right or all hell will broke loose in this place

If this is true it is great news indeed, she will be a breath of fresh air! She is an excellent individual, who has stood up to the adversity she has faced here. I know her personally to be an honest, decent hard working lady and wish her every success in such an important role!

I hope she doesn't follow in the footsteps of the others and give the boss all the rights and privilege to be bias and vindictive to staff. For instance the charter company in east who fired a whole lot of staff and bringing in persons of their own spouse nationality as replacement plus giving those new worker Free housing.

Governor, please be cautious as to whom is appointed as the new Labour Commissioner. That Department has suffered from incompetency over the years. Since this lady has migrated to the BVI, her personal and professional decisions have been questionable. In the last five years, two Commissioners have been removed, one being a BVI Belonger who was raised in the U.S. Virgin Islands and the other being the promotion of the Deputy upon retirement of the then Commissioner. Both persons were grossly incompetent to run the department and were removed prematurely. Cheap online degrees and plagiarized training material does not make one competent to run a department of such importance and magnitude to the territory.
