ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- “I will just say to the members of the community, if you see something say something. The silence only favours those who seek to harm our community.”

This is according to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who has said every law-abiding person in the Virgin Islands must be willing to speak up in defence of the territory that “we so love”.

Dr Wheatley was speaking at a Press Conference called by the National Security Council (NSC) on October 12, 2023, to update the community on recent events that have raised concerns in the territory.

The issues included the shooting of a prison guard who was transporting an inmate to court, a disturbance at Elmore Stoutt High School and a spike in burglaries.

Premier Wheatley thanked the Governor, John J. Rankin, CMG and Police Commissioner Mark Collins for responding positively to his request to have the press conference in response to the concerns of the public “who want to hear from their leaders as it pertains to crime.”

He said as Minister of Finance he has been supportive in providing the resources necessary for the police to be able to do their work; however, other entities have a responsibility to ensure the VI remains a safe place to live, to work, and to visit.

Teach children ‘right from wrong’

The Premier then made a direct appeal to families.

“Families have to ensure that we do our part to raise persons who are positive, constructive members of society.

“And when we see our children engaged in activities that we know are wrong we have to step up to the plate and we have to ensure that those activities do not take place. And we have to raise our children in such a way where they know right from wrong and they do what is right.”

‘It takes a village to raise a child’

Premier Wheatley added that we also have responsibilities as members of a community, and be able to respond, “When we see families that are clearly struggling, whether single-parent homes, whether persons are having difficulty making ends meet, they have to work more than one job.”

He said the Virgin Islands must abide by the principle that it takes a village to raise a child.

The Premier also acknowledged the churches in the community who he said have recognised their responsibility to help strengthen the social fabric of the community.

I am not a fan of this man either but you need to direct your rightful anger over the increments to the Governor who is directly responsible for the public service. The Minister of Finance gave him all the funds. The Governor has failed us as public officers and he needs to be called out.

Use extreme caution in anything the police say to the public on crime

Well said but to be specific you mean the Commissioner of police as he has a serious challenge with the truth. He is now desperate and more dangerous than ever.

The Governor and his UK Commissioner of police will use this and the other crime events not to admit their failure to secure the BVI people and their failure in their responsibilities but they are using this to try to justify the need to pass their police act to try to take away the people's human and democratic rights.

Everyone knows she is on the pay role of the colonial masters or she would have already been investigated and charged for the many open threats she does on elected officials she hates and get away with it. If she was doing this on the UK Governor the UK Commissioner of police would have done make her a person of interest. Double standard set of colonial people.

What he should tell the BVI is the UK neglected the raising of the BVI when they were infants. The BVI raised itself and they did not use the UK as a role model as they are worse than what they are now trying to accuse and brand the BVI to be. Although the BVI did well with their share of mistakes like every country, Now the Governor & his UK bosses using an order in council which is a modern day slavery whip to suspend the BVI's constitution because they all of sudden do not like how the BVI raised itself. So with the slavery whip they are now dictating that the BVI IMMEDIATELY change into the adult they want the BVI to be or they will whip them into what they want. This is tantamount to telling adults you are a child again because I say so. You will only become an adult if they are pleased with your progress being in the way they want only. Failure to do so they will cease the BVI from being an adult anymore. What a high handed anti democratic action while no one can hold the UK accountable nor challenge their high handedness. This is wrong on all fronts

He said the Virgin Islands must abide by the principle that it takes a village to raise a child.

Before the village comes the parent, and preferably in the plural: mother and father. The Caribbean concept of the extended family can lead to parents neglecting their responsibilities.
