FISH BAY, Tortola, VI- Minister of State for the Americas and Overseas Territories, Mr Alexander Jesse Norman of the United Kingdom (UK) will be in the Virgin Islands (VI) from tomorrow, October 27, 2022, until October 28, and Opposition Member Hon Carvin Malone (AL) believes it is an opportunity for the VI to let him know it is not in favour of the Order in Council to suspend the local constitution.

According to Hon Malone, the message should be that the Order in Council is removed ‘forthwith’.

Hon Malone was at the time a guest on JTV’s Big Story with Cathy O. Richards, discussing recent developments in the United Kingdom (UK), including the resignation of Mary Elizabeth Truss as UK Prime Minister after serving just forty-five (45) in office.

It was Truss who had appointed Norman to the post of Minister for Commonwealth and Overseas territories when we took up the seat as Prime Minister.

It was also Truss who was responsible for the Order in Council being put in ‘reserve’.

‘We must band together’- Hon Malone

“I think that we must, must, band together and we can send a message not only to the sitting government, but to the Governor [John J. Rankin] and to the Minister of Overseas Territories when he arrives here on Thursday…a clear precise and unequivocal message, they have to know that we know that we have work to do as it relates to governance and transparency and accountability.”

According to Hon Malone, the threat of suspension of the constitution via the Order in Council is not justified.

“To hold a guillotine, to empty two-thirds of the barrel and load the other third with bullets and play Russian roulette, it is not the way that we should do this, not in this century, not in this time, not in this space,” Hon Malone said.

Premier looks forward to engaging UK Minister

Meanwhile, at the continuation of the 7th Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said he was looking forward to engaging Minister Norman when he visits the Territory.

“Among other things, we will discuss the progress of reform and strengthening the economic resilience of the territory,” Dr Wheatley stated.

Carvin please be quiet and take a seat...without something hanging over the heads of the government official, they will NEVER change. For years we wanted and have been advocating for change and good governance but everyone turned a blind eye. Because of the COI, the country is finally getting the reforms it needs. Keep the order in council so that we can get this country on the right path. all the promises every election of good governance never worked

The "Order in Council" is an actionable document. Is there any history of it being implemented and held in reserve in the UK? I can't believe that a legal decisions can be held in a "If this, do that" time frame for implementation. Holding it in reserve without a time frame doesn't seem proper.

According to our current Governor, John J. Rankin the UK demands partial reformation of our consttution, not as many would have us believe full suspension of our Constitution. As I have written or typed a number of times, our present Poitical Cabinet heads by the Hon. Premier Dr. Natalio Sajande Wheatley has agreed to complied with the CoI recommendations, and to meet there two years duration time.
When the above was agreed to the Hon. Minister was a member of the Unity Government that brought both th then VIP Administration, and the opposition together, to from a the current Unity Government. The Hon. Julian Frazer remained the only opposition members. Soon after, Hon. Minister Carvin crossed the floor, and joined the Opposition.
Stop yapping you moth Hon. Carvin Malone. If the United government refused to comply with the CoI recommendations as agreed to, the UK's goverrment will but to do what is necessary to do in order better governance to come to fruition in the BVI. Please stop rocking an already unstable ship, so to speak.

Sad to say but some of our political leaders that we thought would have help us up, rather have in fact proven to be pulled down. We surely are in desperate need of better governance, but inexperience novices won't fair any better at these troubling times, when our economy is in shambles, and greedy politicians want more, and more for themselves, and choice-picked cronies.

    Prayer for Devine help following:

May You God our Creator, and merciful Father help us, by the strength of Your loving grace, and deliver ous out of the heavy handedness of our political downpressers enemies speedily. Amen.
