PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Close to a month after Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) had reported that former Principal of Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) Sandy M. Harrigan-Underhill been tipped for Director of the new teacher's training institute, our first and accurate story has been confirmed.

“I’m delighted to welcome Mrs Harrigan-Underhill to HLSCC,” President of the HLSCC, Dr Richard E. Georges, said via a post on Facebook on Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

‘Outstanding choice’- Dr Georges

Dr Georges added: “She is an outstanding choice as the first Director of our new Institute of Education, bringing a wealth of experience from leadership roles at the territory’s largest secondary school, and experience in the sector both locally and internationally,” he said.

The post stated that Mrs Harrigan-Underhill has more than 27 years of experience in education and 10 years in progressive leadership positions.

She has a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration at Grand Canyon University and a Bachelor in Business Teacher Education at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Mrs Harrigan-Underhill ran unsuccessfully on the National Democratic Party (NDP) ticket in the 2019 General Election.

It is also unclear if Mrs Harrigan-UnderHill will be a candidate with the NDP for the 2023 General Elections.

Institute of Education

The Institute of Education was established to be the centre of the facilitation of sustained teaching excellence in the territory.

Its mission is to develop effective educators who demonstrate progressive ideals, through research-driven, innovative and reflective practice, which promotes critical thinking skills and encourage lifelong learning.

The institute will provide support for educators in an inclusive training environment that facilitates training and professional development that embraces best practices principles, the HLSCC stated.

Yeah, I don't think she'll give up her good job to take that gamble following him again. Not this time around at least. But hey, it was worth a try. Sometimes in life you won't know for sure unless you try, even though she came up short...
