PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- It was in January of 2022 that Mrs Sandy M. Harrigan-Underhill was appointed the first Director of the Institute of Education at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).

She took a short leave of absence earlier this year and during that period she was a candidate with the Opposition National Democratic Party (NDP) for the Fourth District. She; however, lost the election to Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith, who is now the Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture.

This was Mrs Underhill's second loss at the elections, as she ran in 2019 with the same NDP as an At Large Candidate.

She returned to her post as the Director of Institute of Education following the 2023 general election; however, word is that she has given notice to the college that she will be stepping down from the post.

Many persons and the intellectual class believe Mrs Harrigan-Underhill was the best fit for the job, as she continues to be a leader in education management. Mrs Harrigan-Underhill was a former Principal of Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS).

What is the job about?

It is unclear why Harrigan-Underhill is leaving her post, as the job is now being advertised by the college.

In her capacity as Director of the Institute, Harrigan-Underhill worked in conjunction with the Education Ministry to advance their mandates for the education training needs of the territory.

She served as an ambassador for education training locally, regionally, and internationally.

Director Harrigan-Underhill also has the responsibility for garnering support for the Institute and building strong partnerships in advancing the vision of the Institute. In her post, she is also responsible for leading the facilitation of training in education that is research-driven, innovative, and reflects current best practices in education.

My NDP can never win until Marlon is removed from the Head of the Party. I do not know why some top brass in the party cannot see this fact.

This lady seems to be unstable and not a team player.

In my humble opinion, Dr. Underhill performed admirably in her role as the Institute's first Director. Sadly, she was often undermined and disrespected by the powers that be in senior leadership at HLSCC. There needs to be a changing of some of the old guards at that institution. The culture is VERY toxic!

I imagine it's very frustrating to deal with the Ministry of Education when they find it impossible to issue certificates to students who passed the EPE exams. This is a crying shame while we talk about having the best interest of our children at heart. The Minister of Education need to see to it that those certificates are issued. Why are these children being denied? They passed the exams in fourth form and should be highly commended. If they had done something disgraceful it would have been plastered all over the media. Fair is fair give the children their certificates.

I’ve never heard of certificates being issued for the EPE examinations. Passing the EPE is a graduation requirement. The children that met all requirements graduated and received their school leaving certificates. Please excuse me if I am wrong about this. Ignorance really taking over this place…

For your information certificates were issued for those who passed the exams in form 5 while those who passed in form 4 received no certificates. I have spoken to many of the parents and they have confirmed that this is the case. Why don't you do some investigation and learn..."Please excuse me if I am wrong about this. Ignorance really taking over this place...." like really? Did the Department of Education loose the documents....what is the problem? Even if this is the first time certificates are being issued there should be a record of who passed at the fourth form sitting. IS THIS THE WAY WE WOULD DEAL WITH MATTERS ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE SHOULD WE GO INDEPENDENT.
