ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Due to the increase in active COVID-19 cases in the Virgin Islands, it comes as no surprise that there will be no face-to-face schooling beginning this Lent term.

Parents and guardians of students in the public school system were informed on January 1, 2022, that all public schools will reopen for the Lent term utilising the online method.

According to a bulletin from Government Information Service, classes will begin on Thursday, January 6, 2022; however, principals and teachers will begin on Tuesday, January 4.

Education Ministry monitoring situation

As a result of the current status of COVID cases in the Territory, the Ministry of Education is being cautious as they monitor the situation, the bulletin stated.

Our newsroom has been informed that some private schools have already made the decision to have classes online.

As of December 31, 2021, there are 423 reported active cases of COVID-19 in the Virgin Islands, with the majority 322 on Tortola.

I will say this, and I am being transparent, yes sometimes I am a critic of the Deputy Premier but not this time. I fully agree 100% with the decision he made. Like him or not, no one should have any negative comments about the decision he made.

So thousands of adults can go party at Foxy's but kids can't learn in person? Disgusting. Do better.

People choose to go to foxy and all the other crowded high risk places. Children have to go to school. Why should parents who have decided to forego parties, clubs etc and following protocols have to send their children into a classroom to get exposed to those who reside in party parent households

The innocent always have to pay for the guilty. I am one of the parents that has been following protocols from day one and so is my child, it is not right for the parents that have been following protocols to have their children exposed to the party central parents children in the classroom.

Who is going to teach your children when we lack teachers and so many teachers have covid? Sending them to school makes no difference as they wouldn’t have a teacher... why not allow online school so the teachers could at least teach why isolating?? What about students who have to isolate and cant go to school as their is no online schooling if it was face to face?? You have to look at both sides before picking a side!! The best bet is online where everyone can learn and I’ll teachers can still teach... rather than sending the kids to school to be a pain after realizing they have no teachers

With the call the Education Minister made. I don’t want my son exposed in the classroom by other children who’s parents is not following protocols. And I am not in anyway blaming the children, the blame lays on the irresponsible parents.

With all that has been going on with COVID, I prefer for my child to do online school from home. The Education Minister decision was a good call.

This online school story is non productive to students and teachers. Most of the children do not pay attention anyhow. It's always online classes when parents become irresponsible with their behaviours. I guess they don't think about their children's education while partying. On the other hand some of them don't mind inline since they can do the work and the children get As. The school's need to reopen even if it's the half day sessions. Inline school does not cut it. Every other work and business place can be opened but teachers be online to stress yourselves out. I wonder why Foxy's, Trellis Bay and others weren't told to be online to curb the spread? Total craziness in this place...fed up

I mean, what other choice do we have. We the parents with children 6 and under have to brainstorm and figure something out.

Were you one of the attendees or instigators of these large money making covid super-spreader events? If not, surely you, like myself, and 3/4 of the BVI saw this coming? Knowing this would be the case, did you and many of the other parents facing a dilemma now due to the return of virtual learning think about writing or petitioning the Govt to put stricter measures in place, restrict large gatherings, etc?

We were not out of the woods but we were doing well. If everyone had did their part and follow the protocols that was set in place we may not have been where we are today. Sometimes in order for things to work, you have to put all your selfish and hard headed ways aside and take one for the team.

Govt did not ban the Xmas parties, if I remember correctly, they OPENED and let up all gathering protocols restrictions a few months b4 Xmas, so by the looks of it, they encouraged it !!! Yall have shallow memories!!!!
