BALSAM GHUT, Tortola, VI- A prison officer is reportedly nursing a wound inflicted to his face by an inmate of Her Majesty's Prison (HMP) at Balsam Ghut, Tortola on August 25, 2022.

According to reports, the prisoner was being escorted when he struck the officer in the face with a sharp object.

The weapon was reportedly subsequently retrieved following a search of the inmate.

The prison officer required treatment at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital.

It is unclear if the prisoner has since been charged by police, as efforts to get a comment from HMP boss Guy M. Hill were unsuccessful.

And you think that make sense or will solve the problem, it's a shame how many ppl like your comment. Just by your comment and the ppl who like your comment makes you all no different from the prisoner, who are you all to judge. You are all sinners straight to jail for you all

Guy Hill has been hiding quite a bit of stuff. There was a water issue and for an entire weekend this man never came to address the issue. Inmates could not even drink water for an entire day and officers could not use the bathroom because of lack of water. The man don't walk the prison grounds and is unaware of anything that is going on. He is the first Superintendent to receive so many transfers and persons leaving under him. Staff has to work double shift while others who are frustrated because of his lack of leadership call in sick. He sits in his office with an additional five officers who refuse to work the shift system and are close to him. This man has failed the BVI and the prison service. As a staff member I think he should resign and leave the job for a local who is willing to fix the issue. If he can't fix a simple water issue, I don't think he is ready to handle the prison. He has just been getting a free cheque every month at tax payers expense. Imagine the officer ask you to relocate him and you put him back in the same vicinity almost causing him to lose his life.

Guess he is striving to bring order to the dis-order but because we are accustomed to the slackers he appears as the evil one. The entire Government Employment need a shake up. To much slackers and to much Joy-riding.

I have one question for you, do you realize it is a prison and not your home. If they wanted water on a regular they would be at their own home, not in prison.

Well since when by one just asking for a transfer it means just jump to his request and give it right away?
Do you think he is the one to run in and supply the water, or jump in the toilet and fix it?
    • @Wait (26/08/2022, 14:43) Like (7) Dislike (1) Reply
The water issue has been there for over a year, it is his job to ensure that basic necessities are available. It shouldn't be a case where when the situation worsens for him to then give instructions. Now i completely understand that the two of you are friends. But he has a responsibility. Now to clear your ignorance again. If an inmate and an officer has an issue, there should be means to quell the situation. The officer asked to be removed because he was jumped by the same inmate, you took him and send him back into the same environment and your ignorant self here on the media saying that he shouldn't just jump to the request. How many stabbings were there within the last year under this same superintendent? since you don't know more than three. So there is an issue and sitting behind a desk and not walking the prison and finding out what is going on does not solve the problem.

Are the officers afraid of the prisoners? If that is the case, then the officers need to resign not ask to be removed. Transferred to where? The prisoners need to be under some semblance of order. They should have no access to any sharp objects. Their quarters need to be searched on a daily basis. I wonder if the superintendent is in hiding - don't want the prisoners to see him. hmmmm

Y'all prison officers are quick to point fingers when yall are part of the issue of why water wasn't at the prison. Talk the truth God love. Stop pointing fingers and learn to work together. sick and tired of you all. Yes, there are things Mr Hill can do but what support does he have when 95% of yall undermining him? Stop playing the victim and work together and the jail will change.

Please stop suggesting hike in violent crimes.
If it was your son the done the said crime, would you have suggested such a response? I don't think so.

Seriously you can go prison for stealing from a store and get killed by someone who have nothing to lose. The Tortola prison is filled with drugs, cellphone, inmates with big chains and deadly weapons. It’s a sickening shame how certain people never said enough is enough then again why would they? They are also living off of the criminal income

Seems like the prison needs some really serious and strict prison officers, who would not fail to bust down those prisoners who mess with them.

Just stab him back in his face, the same exact location. So that it would be a lesson for all those inmates that is thinking about hurting another prison officer.

Its ashame that truth, and honesty does not win in the BVI.. The corruption in the BVI prison system has been going on for years. An honest person cannot do their job effectively. Guy Hill is NOT a corrupt man. Could that be the problem? The corruption is not with him. It is unfair to expect him to fix what has been damaged for so long. Maybe they need to check some of them who working with him. Its sad that we are so quick to call down our own...this place is sad

Issues were @ Her Majesty’s Prison way before Hill got there: government after government have fail to deal rightfully with domestic issues just think on that dump site at pockwood pond for years hazard to the people health

I don’t need to defend Hill because he is simply an administrator
    • yeah (27/08/2022, 08:13) Like (2) Dislike (1) Reply
An administrator who only speaks about Texas to inmates and officers. As you get to his office is a story about Texas. I have seen other administrators who have atleast tried to make a change, he does nothing at all just draws a salary. You had some UK person's here a few months ago who made proper internal recommendations and he still sat behind his desk and did nothing. He has an officer working with him just to remind him of what schedules he has. Every Monday is a meeting to say that officers don't like him. He has four other female officers in an office saying they are doing Intel yet they don't walk the prison like him. Another one who is there as the secretary to the matron. The prison is short staff and he is not making any decisions to fix it. You have five 8-4 staff put them to strengthen shifts. The UK person's recommended it the staff recommended it but he has interest in them so he has five women around him doing nothing. So tell me which part of him is good. Not once has he had a meeting to tell officers what good he is doing to make things easier. Just coming and talk about Texas

The same weapon the inmate used was probably supplied by one of the officers, them is who does take in all kind of things for the prisoners for money.

To give *hr******* the jail to run, is to give the inmates control of said jail. He works for the inmates, the government is just his scapegoat.

How can inmates be allowed to wear chains? That is a weapon itself which can turn into a whip, brass knuckles and a choker to strangle other inmates.

Ridiculous. First things first put them in standard orange prison uniform and take away all that jewelry for f&&& sake it’s not a hotel.

The majority of these demonic creatures ,housed in Balsum are updeislanders and or sons and daughters of up de Islanders. And so are the guards and policemen. They are all one and the same in an environment that they have patterned after their life and living in their home countries
at the expense of theUK. There is no way the BVI could afford its prison and law enforcement if it became independent. These inmates should be housed in the UK or in their countries for adequate confinement and a possible turnaround of their lives. In the VI prison, they are simply living their dream.
