MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica- Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Hon Gaston A. Browne has advised Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) to “stay the course”.

Hon Browne spoke with Acting Director of Communications Mrs Karia J. Christopher in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where heads of CARICOM member states were meeting for the 49th Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, from July 6 to 8, 2025.

Mrs Christopher asked Hon Browne, “What advice do you have for the Premier of the Virgin Islands, as we traverse some of the issues that we are going through now, like our CoIs and things like that, as we are still an OT Member State?”

Hon Browne replied, “[The] basic ingredients as a leader is time, just stay the course, the experience will come, and I’m pretty sure that he will emerge as a very significant leader, one of the more significant leaders and certainly a significant regional player.”

'Stay the course'

The leader of the Antigua and Barbuda government, who is known regionally to not mince his words, added that Premier Wheatley has his support and that of senior leaders within CARICOM

Hon Browne reiterated that Premier Wheatley should “stay the course and serve his people with love”.

This support for Premier Wheatley and the Virgin Islands was also expressed by the Deputy Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Jamell R. Robinson, who expressed that the United Kingdom-imposed Order in Council should be lifted.

Premier Wheatley is currently engaged in his second and final day of meetings with the Minister for the Overseas Territories, the Honourable Stephen J. Doughty, and other UK Government officials, which are part of the ongoing dialogue between the Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom on governance reform and other bilateral issues.

AND WHEREAS the Premier and Minister of Finance has not to date produced a strategic financial plan outlining the Government’s vision and goals for its term in office as mandated by the Public Finance Management (Amendment) Act 2012.

AND WHEREAS the Territory of the Virgin Islands continues to suffer from a lack of inward investment while other Caribbean nations and our neighbours in the United States Virgin Islands continue to attract major investments to add to their tourism product and increase their respective Government’s financial resources.

AND WHEREAS the Premier in his capacity as Minister for Tourism has failed to produce a Tourism Plan to safeguard and enhance our tourism market share despite repeated calls to do so by industry stakeholders and Members of the Opposition.

AND WHEREAS Prospect Reef Hotel, an extremely valuable piece of Government owned real estate, remains in a dilapidated state with little details of the plans for its revival to enhance the tourism offerings of the Territory.

AND WHEREAS the Premier and Minister of Finance continues to squander public resources on matters that bring no financial returns to the people of Virgin Islands including; his non-stop party following the inaugural flight of American Airlines from Miami to Beef Island, the failed Virgin Islands Music Festival 2024, approximately $300,000 USD to sponsor the Vybz Kartel show, the constant international traveling by him and his colleagues compliments of the public’s purse with no results to show while other important initiatives remain unfunded or underfunded.

Maybe his support is based on the fact that the bvi is in the worst state it has ever been. Tell me you don't like the bvi without telling me you don't like the bvi.
