Harrigan-Underhill claims victimisation
Harrigan-Underhill, speaking at the NDP Launch of Candidates at Sir Olva Georges Plaza on March 18, 2023, was urging persons to vote when she noted that she understands why persons sometimes don’t vote, “because, I have myself been through the wringer for the last four years, but people of the Virgin Islands I am not a victim although victimised. We are not victims although victimised. We will not sit back and let another four years of what I call dangerous leadership continue.”
The former Principal of Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), Harrigan-Underhill, had resigned from the post to contest the 2019 general elections as an At Large candidate with the NDP; however, was unsuccessful.
She was; however, appointed as the first Director of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Institute of Education in January 2022 under the VIP Administration, but has since resigned to vie for a seat in the Fourth District.
‘It could not be true, what is it I heard’- Premier
Speaking at the campaign launch of the VIP’s First District Candidate Dr Karl Dawson at the Cappoons Bay Recreation Ground on March 19, 2023, Premier Wheatley said he heard one of the NDP candidates was talking about being victimised by the VIP administration.
“I am going to go back and I am going to listen to it. I heard one of the candidates talking about victimisation. And I have to go back [to the tape] because it could not be true, what is it I heard.
Because when the National Democratic Party was in power, they attempted to victimise me and it was Dr [Karl] Dawson who would defend me,” Dr Wheatley, a former lecturer of HLSCC stated.
‘I going to talk the thing’
Addressing the topic of victimisation, Premier Wheatley said despite leading HLSCC to international accreditation, the NDP Government at the time refused to extend Dr Dawson’s contract as HLSCC President and took bread out of his and his family’s mouth.
“I going to talk the thing.
“And a son of the soil, a proud Virgin Islander had to go all the way to Anguilla.”
Premier Wheatley said the NDP Government made it seem as if Mr Dawson was not qualified, yet he went on to become the President of the community college in Anguilla, where he excelled, “to the point where they did not want him to leave Anguilla.
“But he came back, because [his wife] Janice called him back, but not just that but because Dr Karl Dawson had a passion to serve his people.”
Premier Wheatley questioned how a son of the soil like Dr Dawson could be treated so poorly.
“And you got the gall to come up and start talking about victimisation? I going [to] listen because it can’t be true, because the person who they say said it, Dr Dawson advocated for that person to get a job at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, under a VIP Government, somebody who ran with the NDP before.”
Untruthful Underhill?
Premier Wheatley also suggested that Ms Harrigan-Underhill was dishonest in her interview for the post of Director of the HLSCC’s Institute of Education.
“They asked her a question, ‘Are you going to run in the interview?’ and she said no,” Dr Wheatley stated.
“Under a VIP Government, regardless of who you ran with or affiliated [to], if we believe you qualified we give you an opportunity, and then [you] have the gall to talk about victimisation? It cannot be true,” Dr Wheatley emphasised.
