DUFF'S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- In what has been considered a rare incident, ranks of the Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) reportedly came under gunfire last night, Saturday, July 19, 2025.

According to the RVIPF, the incident occurred in Duffs Bottom where officers pursuing suspects in a suspected vehicle theft came under direct gunfire.

Police, in a press release on July 20, 2025, said no officers were injured during the exchange.

It is unclear whether officers returned fire.

Eventful night on Tortola

The incident was just one in an eventual night on Tortola.

According to the RVIPF, officers conducted stop-and-check operations across Tortola and, during one such operation in the Huntums Ghut area, a firearm and ammunition were recovered during a vehicle search.

One male was arrested in connection with this discovery.

This marks the second firearm seized by police in the past 48 hours and brings the total number of illegal firearms removed from the streets in 2025 to 14.

Additionally, officers responded to three major incidents overnight: an armed robbery outside a nightclub in Road Town where a male was robbed of cash; a shooting in the Long Bush area that left one male hospitalized with gunshot injuries to the lower body; and the incident where the police came under gunfire.

'Dangerous escalation'

Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool described the night’s events as a dangerous escalation that would be met with a firm and focused police response.

“While we’re making progress in removing illegal weapons, tonight’s events show our work is far from done,” said Commissioner Vanterpool.

“Attacks on our officers and community members will not be tolerated. We have dedicated teams working around the clock on these investigations.”

Ms Vanterpool further stated that all victims are receiving the necessary support and that intensive investigations are actively underway.
