ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A petition has been launched for the Governor of the Virgin Islands, Daniel Pruce, to reconsider his deportation order for popular journalist Cathy O. Richards.

Richards, who is from Guyana but has been working in the VI for over a decade, was ordered deported by Governor Daniel Pruce, according to Statutory Instrument 2026 NO. 63, dated October 20, 2026, and published in the Official Gazette on October 22, 2026.

The senior reporter with Japhix Entertainment (JTV) since 2016 was found guilty on a single count of uttering forged documents.

According to the petition started by Enrique Callwood on change.org, Richards has been an integral part of the Virgin Islands community, contributing in numerous positive ways that cannot be overstated. "Her journey and story are not just hers to tell, but are woven into the fabric of the many lives she has touched."

The petition has since received 214 signatures, with a goal of 500 signatures.

'A beloved member' of the VI community

Callwood said Richards is a beloved member of the VI community, and the deportation order threatens to tear apart the bonds she has worked hard to build and the impact she has had on so many. He said that, over the years, Richards has played pivotal roles, from volunteering at local shelters to spearheading community initiatives designed to uplift and empower the less fortunate, and that her selfless actions have not only provided immediate relief to those in need but have also inspired lasting change, creating a ripple effect of generosity and community spirit.

"It is important to recognise that Cathy’s contributions extend far beyond what can be easily quantified. For many, Cathy has been a source of hope during trying times, displaying unwavering kindness and support that has left an indelible mark on the Virgin Islands. In a world where such warmth and genuine concern can be scarce, Cathy has consistently shown that communities thrive on togetherness and mutual care."

'Balance justice with mercy'

According to the petition, the deportation order against Richards also raises concerns regarding the values the VI wishes to uphold as a community. "While laws are in place for good reasons, it is equally vital to balance justice with mercy. Cathy acknowledges any past mistakes she may have made, but her ongoing commitment to rectify and contribute positively speaks volumes about her character."

Instead of deportation, the petition stated, a more humane approach would be to offer pathways for rehabilitation and integration. It said such actions would not only benefit Richards but also serve as a testament to the community’s capacity for compassion and mutual support.

"We urge Governor Pruce to reconsider the deportation order in light of Cathy’s positive impact and the shared belief in second chances. By doing so, we preserve a community member who embodies the spirit of unity and love we all cherish and reflect.

"Please join us in supporting Cathy by signing this petition. Your signature is a step towards maintaining the strength and richness of our community, demonstrating that we stand by those who give so much of themselves to us all," Callwood wrote.

Many on social media have openly expressed solidarity with Richards, a VI Icon Awards winner in 2025.

Was there a petition for DA?

She not getting the usual "Send 'em back where they came from?" that people with the wrong names usually get.

If she allowed to stay it will be interesting to see how many signatures it takes. All the "business people with children will be watching carefully."

That is all well and good, they can sign petition however, that does not mean the Governor is going to give in. She stays, is she going to be allowed continue being a news reporter. It will not be the same, it will always be on people’s mind what she did and she will always get the side eye .
