ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After over two decades at the helm of the Virgin Islands Heritage Month Committee, Reverend Dr Melvin A. Turnbull has said he is ready to pass on the baton and has already “selected” two “suitable candidates” to co-chair the committee.

The two selected to co-chair the Committee are his son Reverend Dr Michael A. Turnbull and Pastor Jovan E.L. Cline.

This announcement was made by Chairman Dr Turnbull at the Emancipation Service at Sunday Morning Well on August 6, 2023. The Emancipation Service was organised by the Virgin Islands Heritage Month Committee, which according to Dr Turnbull, started leading the Emancipation celebrations on the national level in 1997.

‘I am getting ready to pass the baton’- Reverend Dr Melvin A. Turnbull

“I’m getting ready, after 26, years, and looking for suitable candidates, willing candidates, determined candidates, I am glad to announce today that I am getting ready to pass the baton to two of our territory’s youngest and most dynamic leaders who are pastors.

“Now we are going to do the 70th [Emancipation celebrations] together. I have some great initiatives for the 70th and then they will subsequently take over completely.”

Dr Turnbull then disclosed the names of the incoming co-chairmen, who were both at the Emancipation Service.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the selected new faces and co-chairs of the Virgin Islands Heritage Month Committee are the Reverend Dr Michael Andre Turnbull, Senior Pastor of Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church; and the Senior Pastor of New Life Baptist Church, Pastor Jovan Edward Lee Cline,” Reverend Turnbull stated.

So this a family thing or what? All other emancipation/festival subcommittees have open and transparent selection of new Chairpersons so can someone please tell me what is happening here.

I agree it was about time for this man to give up chair of this festival subcommittee but the way he is doing it leaves a bitter taste in most people's mouths.

These two young men are more than capable but let's hope they are more fair and non judgmental and hypocritical like their fathers especially the one giving up the chairman seat.

There are many capable people in positions who were not selected fairly. That is really the point. How were they selected? Because they are family or because they capable? The public should know.

DO YOU HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO CHOOSE WHO COULD BE CHAIRMAN? I THINK THE GOVERNMENT HAS THAT POWER NOT YOU. PLEASE HAVE SEAT AND LET THE GOVERNMENT DO THERE WORK.

To his son? What crazy conflict of interest, it’s clear pastor Mel is a two faced hypocrite when coming to transparency

Anyone who remains in a position as long as this chair was the head raises issues of accountability.

The Quiet one has spoken , hopefully he remembers that we cannot fool GOD , so much BAD THINGS has been and is developing in this once peaceful and lovingly beautiful country , yet he remains ( SILENT LIKE A LAMB ) only dresses up like a peacock at certain times or occasions and portraying an image of holier than thoU with a cheap smile as if everything is alright / look within thyself bro
