TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- Tasked with extending the airport runway on Beef Island, Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has been making initial moves to achieve this mandate publicly given to him by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) back in June 2023.

On Friday, August 18, 2023, stakeholders and a diverse group of industry partners from a wide cross-section of the public service and the private sector, the tourism and hospitality industry, gathered to share ideas and discuss the potential expansion of the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport.

The visioning meeting was chaired by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works, Mrs Elvia Smith-Maduro, who presented a timeline on the previous attempts to commence the airport expansion project, outlining the various roadblocks along the way.

Stakeholders meet to create vision for airport expansion

According to a press release from Government Information Services (GIS) on August 22, 2023, progressing forward upon the directive of the Premier, the Ministry is undergoing the process with engagement with stakeholders and various industry partners to ensure that the Terrence B. International Airport expansion can be executed in a way that takes into account as many factors as possible.

Premier Wheatley thanked the Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye Rymer and his team for their efforts in planning and executing the visioning exercise as well as stressed the importance of investing in the Virgin Islands’ tourism product. He said, “When we look to the expansion of our economy, we have to look towards tourism, and certainly this government and whenever I have the opportunity, I speak to the fact that we have to develop tourism and invest more in tourism.”

The Premier added, “It is ultimately going to be our efforts. The efforts of ourselves which will lead to the expansion and strengthening of our tourism product and economy overall. So we cannot take a passive approach that if they want to come they will come. We have to put ourselves in the best possible position for our economy to grow and to develop. One of the major things that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will thank us for is expanding this runway.”

Honourable Rymer thanked the stakeholders and industry partners for attending the visioning meeting and stated that his ministry is well underway in contacting the relevant authorities that will be crucial in the expansion of the airport.

He said, “I know these conversations wouldn't be the first for some of you. But after being given the mandate of extending the runway publicly, I thought it was important that we have this dialogue and engage the stakeholders on how to move forward with the airport expansion. Within the ministry, I want to acknowledge the Permanent Secretary as well and all the work that she has started doing in terms of this airport expansion. We have already engaged the Attorney General's chambers and other stakeholders in terms of moving this project forward. But it's time for us to get to the wider populace so that we can further these discussions.”

‘Let's get going on the extension of this runway’- Premier

While congratulating Hon Rymer for his persistence in making non-stop flight from Miami to the Virgin Islands a priority, Premier Wheatley, speaking at a ceremony for the inaugural commercial flight of American Airlines from Miami to the VI on June 1, 2023, had tasked the minister with getting the runway extended as a key step in VI receiving more direct flights.

“And while he's basking in the moment, I'm going to task him at this particular moment, with getting this runway extended, because of course, I look forward to standing somewhere in this vicinity, perhaps maybe in 2027, so that we can welcome the next flight from New York or from Atlanta or from Boston.

“And that can only happen if we extend this runway. So, Minister, it's more than a conversation at this point. We're looking forward to that request for proposal going out and let's get going on the extension of this runway,” Premier Wheatley had stated.

‘Our grandchildren & great-grandchildren will thank us for expanding’ runway- Premier Dr Wheatley‘

Dr. Wheatley would they thank us for selling the 600+ acres next to this expansion to a Chinese developer to resell a home spots for millions of dollars? How would our grand and great-grand feel about never affording their homeland? Tell the public about this hidden secret Dr. Wheatley.

‘Premier explains efforts to buy Beef Island land’ https://www.bvibeacon.com/premier-explains-efforts-to-buy-beef-island-land/

The BVI Airports Authority is seeking to reacquire more than 650 acres of land on Beef Island from Hong Kong investor Raymond Hung, whose 25- year-old plans for a resort and golf course on the island never came to fruition, Premier Andrew Fahie said last Thursday in the House of Assembly.
The BVIAA has appointed a special committee to negotiate the reacquisition of the “Hung lands,” according to Mr. Fahie.

And ‘Now’ watch this Premier’s move!

It seems like the Chinese has found a new friend 'Sowande'. Ask him about his plans. Ask him of his plans to allow Hung back these 600+ acres of land after Hung failed to meet the Landholder's Agreement terms and therefore had to forfeit the land. The same man who fought with the people to save Beef Island has lost his moral compass on election day!

Expansion of the runway will destroy the BVI. 1. It is another channel for millions of dollars to be thrown away into certain people's pockets. 2. It will destroy our already delicate environment - what are you trying to achieve with a bigger runway? Increased tourism? If we destroy the environment that is our USP then there will be no drive for them to come. 3. The airlines ALREADY have planes that can land on our current runway - they do not come. Provide incentives, reduce fees..... 4. Our infrastructure territory wide is not ready for increased tourism. The government take the people of the BVI for idiots - you think that it will bring more people to your small rental business and make you millions? STOP listening to their SH** - airport expansion will destroy the BVI. There is a reason we don't all want to live in Antigua, Barbados, STT.... we want to live in the BVI because it is beautiful and unique.... I wish for once some of the politicians would see that and do what is better for the territory and not just have a goal to start projects geared towards lining their pockets in the 4 years they have...

After reading all the articles of how direct flights came to BVI lately, it is deceitful for the Premier to give Kye all the credit. What about the past and present Board that did all the leg work to make it happen? What about the current Head of the Airport and his team for the major work he did to make it happen? These and many others made it happen but the Premier & Kye trying to brainwash the people of the BVI with half truths so they can take all the credit and look good on top of other people's labor. This is not right. They are behaving like the Governor now who see nothing good in the BVI unless he does it.

I am not a VIP fan but I am one who like a few things they did even during the hard times of covid like the traffic turn around in Road Town, the new needed modern Elmore Stoutt High School Buildings & facilities, new JVD Primary School & Port facilities at JVD, fixing schools earlier this year for the new 2023/2024 school year, tax exemption on custom duty and purchasing of land for first timers, building homes for many needy persons. There are plenty more but these are the ones I know about along with the direct flights from USA. Let's move on with lengthening the runway right away. It is needed.

All of a sudden there is this great burst of energy for the runway extension. Did the British Military Aircraft have problems when it touched down a few days ago. Could they land with a load of armored personnel carriers and other military hardware. Mobilize the slaves and get this project going the British government will not provide a penny but we must be accommodated. Use tourism as the buzz word and jobs and development that should generate enough economic activity to repay any loan incurred by the natives. John and the operatives there should be quite capable of mobilizing the natives to accomplish this simple task. Geopolitics is at a point where we need to have sufficient military access to every region on the planet. Africa has started to rise up and soon so will the Caribbean. We must act now before they become aware of our plans for them.

Like it or not, believe it or not, the cruise tourism affects more lives in the BVI in a positive way than any other industry.. As a matter a fact every family in one way or the other benefits from cruise ship arrival.. Presently we are looking at one of the best season in our cruise ship history. But there is a huge problem, a power struggle, greed, Division between the 3 most critical sectors, 1/ Port..2/ Pier Park. 3/ Taxi Drivers. .I can admire and appreciate Pier Park and Taxi drivers trying to come together to put things in place to accommodate the arrivals in an organized and caring way.. However, the major Issue is Port. This is a Port responsibility, port jurisdiction and Port has failed badly. Sorry to say, Good Maynard bad Maynard but since her departure the port being void of good, strong knowledgeable leadership. Here is where you Hon Rhymer has failed. As the minister you are very weak, you allowed it to come to this very low declining state, by failing to replace Maynard with a competent and capable person. Leave Politics out ..X Premier Foy had a plan, a vision to have one administration or one CEO in charge of all Ports and I thought that was an idea that worth trying...Airport is important. Hon you did well by getting direct flight from Miami. Good Job.. Lets work with that for now, put Airport extension on hold and focus on what are presently affecting the people, Water, electricity, the Roads,.

Lmao at this being a cross section of industry people. Not a single person here from tourism. Where are the big 7 of lil Dix, virgin, Bitter End, Guana, Oil Nut, Scrub even Lambert and Maria’s and Long Bay? Where JVD people? anegada people? Trellis Bay people? CGB people? Taxi operators? A bunch of old dead people in these pics talking about break out sessions. So old fashioned and out of touch. No visionaries in these pics. If AA can already land and military planes already land, why we need to rush to expand? Aside from just putting money in Crabbe and Ritter and your cronies pockets? Why not upgrade the airport? Increase hangars for private jets? Increase the number of FBOs that operate? Enhance the luggage processing capacity? Upgrade Anegada and VG airports to accommodate more private jets? Fix the lighting system? Invest in Tower and airport service operators so you have no shortage of staffing. Enhance what we have and improve maintenance. Extending the runway is not the answer! Not right now.

A few questions, will an environmental impact plan be carried out for this?
What happened to the self service kiosks that were to be put in place at the airport?
What are the plans for a new incinerator on the island?
Why are people living without water and electricity?

Quick extend the runway so it can be as cheap as possible to get tourists here. Can’t wait till spirit and frontier can land here and bring all those broke ass clowns here. They will do wonders for our tourism product and if we are lucky the bvi will be just as clean and lovely at st Thomas. This is sarcasm in case you didn’t know.

We BVI people are like simple dogs chasing a smell!
    “Money! Money! Money!”
No talk of what is appropriate for our sustained health wealth and happiness. No acknowledgement of the limits we naturally have due to our size, and almost ZERO respect for our natural environment. Not only does it bring tourists to these islands (the main attraction = UNTOUCHED nature), but it is essential for us to live by, even though we import all our food, which makes us think we have no connection. Corals, reefs, sea grass beds, mangroves - all of these create life which creates the air we breathe, creates the networks that allow humans and other species to live.
BVI people laugh at this type of fact because in our damaged minds, Money and God matter more than Nature. We are traumatized by centuries of scarcity, abuse and enforced ignorance.
Now we imagine success to be some kind of Miami version of the BVI. So we want a bigger airport, which means we need more hotels, which means more concrete, more damage to nature and more sewage and dead reefs and garbage and, in the end, more Prospect Reefs - false idols to money that shine like gold for a brief moment and always become broken ruins covered in bush and full of toxic trash.
All you say you love the BVI. You don’t. You love the golden calf called Money. Nature is bigger than both. Put it at the center of all our development and we will begin to be wise, understand real wealth and our great grandchildren and all future generations will be grateful.

How about building a less expensive airport in Anegada??
Flat land and an existing runway. New development and ferry traffic opportunities. Way more real jobs.
But big PROBLEM, much harder to steal money when the project is on a sister island. Also much easier to see your stealing by people that would report it.
This whole project is BAD. Who pushing? Mr Johnson again?

why don't you start by opening the Airport beyond 9:00PM, can you imagine preparing to land then the tower tells you that the Airport closed at 9:00 and because they were up since 5:00AM. And your aircraft have to go back to St. Martin where you have to stay over night costing you $$. what a patty shop .
