ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Subsequent to a meeting held on Monday, May 31 2021, the National Security Council (NSC) decided to place the two senior Prison Officers on duty during the violent altercation that caused the death of Nickail Chambers and the injury of three others at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) on Sunday night, May 30, 2021, on administrative leave.

The meeting was to “consider and review the events at Her Majesty’s Prison, which occurred over the weekend, 29-30 May 2021,” a press release said.

NSC Decision

The press release said after considering the matters at hand, “the NSC later issued a decision, which instructed that immediate steps be taken to enhance the supervision of prisoners at Her Majesty’s Prison and more importantly, that an internal inquiry be launched into the events on the weekend.”

It added: “Council in its deliberations further instructed that the two senior officers, who were on duty during the occurrence of events, be placed on administrative leave, pending further investigation.”

Internal Review

Furthermore, the NSC ordered that “a wider external review of security arrangements at Her Majesty’s Prison should be commissioned and of importance, noted that the current investigation into the wounding and murder at the prison is under the active investigation of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force’s Major Incident Team.”

The NSC then offered their condolences to the family of the deceased.

The NSC comprises the Governor, as Chairman and members, including the Premier; one other Minister, who is the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Agriculture and Fisheries; the Attorney General (ex-officio) and the Commissioner of Police (ex-officio).

More prison officers need to be removed from that institution. They are corrupt in a bad way.

Why blame the guards alone? What about the senior officials? I don't understand why everyone is acting surprised when it's the known fact the prisoners have access to cell phones, drugs, weapons, money and the list goes on.

The majority of prison officers are expatriates. There is a handful of locals working up there

The majority of the prison guards are expatriates so they would take bribes to get rich quick.
They don't care what happens after. As much as we are here arguing about England coming in to run the country, it would be much better if they run that prison for us, so it wouldn't be too corrupt.
We also need to insure that these inmates wear uniforms every day of the week and stop wearing the latest outfit and jewelries. Even cell phones should be taking away from them just like in any other country, because they can organize crimes from inside if they have that power to do so. Lastly our government need to put those prisoners to do hard labor in the streets instead of paying out so much money annually for petty contract.

The persons in charge of the prison are doing a terrible job! Where else in the world would prisoners be able to post pictures of themselves wearing thousands of dollars in jewelry and smoke weed without fear? Our prisoners are known to become impregnated while in prison and even to impregnate women who are not incarcerated. How could this be? Why are they allowed access to their cellphones? Our prison is a joke! What happened over the weekend was not surprising. The National Security Council needs to take responsibility as well because what goes on in the prison is not a secret, yet they fail to address the issues. They all need to be fired!

You are so right. There is one inmate up there right now who is publicly making a mockery of the prison almost daily and the officials would rather turn a blind eye than address it.

We are trying to figure who to blame for this incident. It’s is sad that this has taken place . At some point we are adults and we need to take responsibility for our own actions . Don’t get me wrong I’m sure the officers have made their share of mistakes . When we have above them warning inmates about a search and other plans then whom is to blame . We can point our fingers at the staff but the Honorables knows what is going on and they give no support or foundation for the staff to stand on . The BVI is a very lawless territory and this isn’t a new thing . People speak however they way no matter who it is . Parents let their children talk to them like crap . Then they take that attitude to school towards the teachers , then into the working world then into the jail for some of them . So let’s not blame the officers only. This starts at home. Some of the comments are so sad . Instead of pointing the finger let’s pray and hope a plan is made going forward for the best to help the staff and inmates .
