NSC hails arrest of suspected Pier Park robbers

It has also hailed the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) Marine Unit for its successful operation on Friday, July 7, 2023, which led to the detention of two vessels in waters near to Anguilla.
Pier Park robbery ‘caused great concern for all’- NSC
In a statement today, July 11, 2023, the NSC said the armed robbery at the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park “was a shocking incident” which caused great concern for all present at the Pier Park that day and for the wider community.
“The National Security Council (NSC) wish to assure everyone that safety and security of the Virgin Islands is of the highest priority and welcome the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force’s (RVIPF) announcement that two persons have now been arrested and charged for the robbery.”
The NSC said it thanks Acting Commissioner St.Clair Amory and all those Police Officers who have engaged in investigating this matter.
The RVIPF on July 8, 2023, charged Shamul Mitchell, 35, of Sand Box Road and Jelani Marquis, 27, of Hannahs Estate, for robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offense.
Meanwhile, the NSC said regular Police patrols of the Pier Park will continue to help give assurance to those visiting and working in the area.
RVIPF Marine Unit hailed
The NSC said congratulated the RVIPF Marine Unit for its "successful operation" on Friday, 7 July which led to the detention of two vessels in waters near to Anguilla, the arrest of six persons and the seizure of almost two tonnes of suspected cocaine.
“This was an example of successful collaboration between Overseas Territories, the UK and International Partners and testament to the commitment of the Marine Unit in helping to tackle the illicit trade in narcotics,” the NSC stated.
