‘No fuel disruptions anticipated' for VI- Hon Kye M. Rymer
In a Facebook video released on Friday, April 18, 2026, the minister reassured Virgin Islanders that, based on the territory’s current fuel sourcing arrangements, no disruptions in fuel supply are anticipated at this time.
He stated, “We continue to work with the BVI Electricity Corporation and other key stakeholders to ensure stability in supply and continuity of service.”
G'ovt & BVIEC 'prepared'
Honourable Rymer emphasised that should the situation escalate and lead to sustained increases in global prices, the government of the Virgin Islands, in collaboration with BVIEC, is prepared to implement targeted measures to protect residents and businesses from the full impact of rising fuel costs associated with electricity generation.
He highlighted the significance of energy independence in light of global uncertainty, expressing that ”A greener, more resilient Virgin Islands, powered largely by our own renewable resources, reduces our exposure to distance shocks, lowers long-term costs and preserves the environment we cherish.”
Virgin Islanders encouraged to take advantage of duty-free concessions
Last year, the Cabinet approved an expansion of duty-free concessions from September 2025 through August 31, 2030, setting an ambitious yet achievable target of obtaining 60% of our energy from renewable sources by 2030.
Therefore, Honourable Rymer urged Virgin Islanders to take advantage of this measure, noting that zero customs duty will apply to eligible renewable energy and energy-efficient products imported into the territory.
“Items covered include solar panels, water heaters, solar lighting and appliances, wind technologies, electric vehicles, and chargers, and LED fixtures and bulbs,” Hon Rymdr added.
G'ovt expanding STEP Programme
The government is also expanding the Solar Technology Energy Programme (STEP) with a simpler registration process through the BVI Electricity Corporation.
“Homeowners can purchase systems, register for support with installation and grid connection, and access available subsidies and technical assistance.”
The STEP programme aims to reduce household electricity bills, and current participants are already experiencing significant reductions in their monthly energy costs.
Hon Rymer concluded by stating that the current duty-free window presents a unique opportunity to lower household expenses, create local green jobs, and strengthen our energy independence.
