ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Islands Department of Disaster Management (DDM) says it continues to monitor the progress of three disturbances in the Atlantic, all showing signs of development but are still uncertain.

Referred to as Disturbances 1, 2 and 3, the DDM said Disturbance 2 & 3 may become tropical depressions or tropical storms before moving closer to the Caribbean and that residents should continue to monitor them very closely.

Disturbance 2

“Disturbance 2 is becoming better organized as it is now 2195 miles from the British Virgin Islands. It is centred near 17N, 31W. The movement is to the west-northwest near 12 mph. This motion should continue for the next few days, which should keep the disturbance over the open Atlantic however, these conditions can change.”

While there is no immediate threat to the Caribbean region, the DDM warns that environmental conditions are favourable for further development with an 80 per cent chance of development within the next 7 days.

Disturbance 3

“Disturbance 3 is located along 15W, approaching the coast of Africa. It should emerge into the Atlantic within the next 24 to 48 hours. Environmental conditions appear favourable for this system to develop as well. There is a 50 per cent chance of tropical development within the next 7 days.”

Current forecast models also indicate that another disturbance will likely emerge off of the Coast of Africa by the middle of next week, behind Disturbance 3. They said Conditions appear favourable for this system to develop as well.

“There is a 50 per cent chance that the system behind Disturbance 3 will develop within the next 7 days. Disturbance 1 has become part of the inflow into Disturbance 2. As a result, limited development is expected,” the Department said.
