ELIAT, Israel – In a pageant blemished by politics and the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s Harnaaz K. Sandhu was officially crowned Miss Universe 2021 when the 70th edition of the beauty contest was hosted in Israel’s southernmost city of Eliat.

In the three-hour live show held last evening, December 12, 2021, contestants modeled in swimsuits and evening gowns amongst other competitions, however, although she did not get the crown, Miss Universe BVI Xaria Penn still managed to stun the audiences on the Miss Universe stage.

In a statement ahead of last evening's pageant on the Miss Universe BVI Page, the organization said “We can not express how proud we are of Queen Xaria’s performance thus far! And no matter the outcome we are absolutely pleased with her representation of the British Virgin Islands.”

'I made myself proud' - Miss Penn

Xaria Penn was crowned Miss Universe British Virgin Islands 2021 during the finals held on September 25, 2021, at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College campus in Paraquita Bay.

Miss Penn was just 18 years old when she was crowned Miss British Virgin Islands 2021.

Penn in a Facebook post after last night’s performance said, “I had an amazing time at this pageant I made my country and myself proud I couldn’t ask for anything more!  Thank you all again for your love and support.”

She is the daughter of Devon Penn and Symone Davis-Penn‘s, her father is a senior pastor at Spirit and Truth BVI, a Christian ministry in the Virgin Islands.

That was harsh and unnecessary. Xaria you did well and made me and countless other well wishers proud. Despite the "small size" of the territory, we have "big hearts", talent, beauty and intellect to compete on the world stage. Our day will come and the naysayers would then have a non surgical change of heart.

@hmm that’s why you never accomplish anything in life and why you’re probably struggling like never before! your mindset is your biggest hold back and why 2022 will be your most difficult year. Your mindset and karma will be your reward!!

Thank you for representing Ms Penn.

Keep sending these girls to these competitions when they know the girls don’t have a chance. But at least she got a chance to travel and see Israel.

Thank you for the positive rep. MsPenn. You did well. Many, worldwide, would certainly
be curious andesearched the internet for info about these beautiful Islands. What they found, unfortunately, was the face of a 4 year local prison escapee, a foreigner, living his best life in full view while conducting his established profession as purveyor of ammunition, guns and unidentified contraband described as the largest amount in BVI history. Yes, evidence that our prison gates and our ports, are wide open to one and all. They would have also found reports of a gun homicide and a death ride by scooter. Victims and perpetrator are a BLack young men,so consideration of visiting should not be daunted. It is simply the usual Black Lives and love. The Sand and sea is amazing.

Miss Penn, you did great and was awesome. I saw the videos and you represented yourself well.

Many who are criticizing cannot do what you did so skip pass the negative comments. BVI people are so dangerous that its no joke. Had you made it to the top 10 or 5 they would have been asking for a national holiday. That's life. Take all of the negativity to build your ladder and keep soaring.

      @well done
Most of these negative comments are coming from Haters who doesn't really represent Virgin Islanders. They have no ounce of regards for anything Positive in the Virgin Islands much less for the People. #VIRGINISLANDSMYISLANDSMYPRIDEMYLIFE

Are you sure that ‘BVI people’ made the comments? Don’t be too quick to point fingers when everyone is hiding behind the screen.

      Well Done Xaria!!!

yea because BVI people don't ever hate on each other, ayo always have to point the finger at expats for everything.

You were beautiful on stage and did an amazing job throughout your time in Israel. One of the best representations in a long time regarding physique and height from BVI. For the haters who say a small island can’t wind, look Bahamas made it to top 10 this year, Jamaica a couple years back and Trinidad and Tobago actually won the crown in the 90s. Small minded people is what can’t win.
    • facts (13/12/2021, 14:23) Like (14) Dislike (2) Reply
Trinidad and Tobago won it two times and I can be corrected but I dont think Jamaica ever won Miss Universe...they won Miss World a number of times....so there is hope for us in the BVI..... never mind them small minded people.

      Thanks Xaria

This is what’s wrong with the BVI. Why you can’t just congratulate her on her accomplishments and keep it pushing . This little country so filled with negativity.
Congratulations xaria ! You made us proud indeed .

It is so strange that last year representative was treated so unfairly by the promoter of this BVI Miss Universe. She is not fit to ran this organization. She is racist. Job well done to the lady that went to represent the country. The promoter must stop the racist behavior she displayed with the young lady last year.

It’s so strange the underhandness, lack of transparency, nepotism of the present Miss BVI committee. They preferred to send Miss BVI 2021 or any of them runner up to miss universe. Look joke. At least the promoter of miss universe BVI know how to run a decent and transparent show.

I am of the view that Black women need to appear much more natural in these events. What's with the wigs and extensions? Why can't our women wear their hair in either relaxed or natural styles with natural hair lengths?

If I'm not mistaken the Black women who won this competition many moons ago, wore their hair in it's natural lengths of relaxed or natural styles !

Black women have gotta learn to respect themselves through their hair representations.
    Anything else always yields losers.

I am of the view that the win of Ms. India was political, since Vice Presidents Harris' mother was of Indian origin, giving a nod to the South Asian country.

Only the willingness of ALL Black women in these competitions
wearing their hair in it's natural lengths, as a group, will they ever gain global respect!

It will never be any other way, extensions, wigs, and other "added" pieces, notwithstanding!

Well done to Xaria. I think she represented us well and should be proud of her performance. It’s a tough competition and perhaps not always judged fairly. But it is more than a beauty or modeling competition and our delegate should always be extra well prepared. One of the many thing that stood out to me is the number of the candidates who spoke several languages. A lot of them. Not just their native tongue but several other languages. Prospectives interested in being future candidates for miss BVI universe could stand to take note of this. Try to be at least bilingual or some proficiency in another language. Let’s also make sure they do charitable work in areas in which they are passionate. Charitable work should be a way of life for any prospective miss BVI. This is key as that is what the work of miss universe involves.

The BVI is more than just a representation of a burlap bag and reminder of slavery. So much more could have been represented in the national costume. I was shocked and embarrassed by this display of non creativity and acceptance of past servitude. Do better next time.

I love my dark skinned women. They are truly beautiful. That's the original woman. Satan has blinded the minds of some people that they will never be able to see the beauty in a black woman. People liberate your selves from mental slavery and be illuminated into God's marvellous light!! #Stay Black #stay proud #your beautiful
