FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI— The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) has given notice to students, faculty and staff that they will institute mandatory vaccinations for all students and employees.

The notice, signed by UVI President David Hall, was sent out on Friday, June 25, 2021.

The decision comes as universities across the United States (US) are implementing similar decisions.

The balancing act

According to Mr Hall, "This decision was made based on what the Board felt was in the best interest of the entire UVI Community. This is also a national trend wherein approximately 500 universities and colleges have also embraced mandatory vaccinations in one form or another," he said.

"As the only institution of higher education in the Territory, the University's mission is to make education accessible to Virgin Islanders. Yet it also has a responsibility to create a safe environment for students and employees. The Board is striving through this policy to be respectful of both values."

Access to vaccines

According to UVI, students who do not have access to the vaccines will be provided their first shot up on arrival on campus and are required to commit to regular testing until they are fully vaccinated.

The effective dates for compliance with the mandatory vaccination requirement are as follows:

Students: August 9, 2021
Staff: August 1, 2021
Faculty: August 11. 2021

Consequences

Students and staff who chose not to comply with the vaccine requirement will face consequences as unvaccinated students will not be allowed to attend in-person classes.

Online programmes will remain an alternative option, although not all classes will offer a remote-learning option.

This is going to cause a lot of problems if you are fully vaccinated that's is your choice stop playing god among the people. This is modern day slavery I do not support this at all if in the next five years there are consequences for this action who will be held responsible. The people should get up and protest against this. Instead encourage people to boost their immune system. People who got the vaccine are still dying from the virus so what sense does it make. The day bvi comes up with this there will no peace for the leader's. This is going to cause a lot problems that will take years to fix. I am not discriminating against the vaccine but do not Force people to take it. When you apply force by any means you are blocking their human rights. They did not create the virus let this be a choice not a force. I pray the students and staff stands up for their right

People still die in car crashes with their seatbelts on, by your (lack of) logic people should stop wearing seatbelts. Not to mention that condoms are not 100% safe either - guessing you could be a good example of that

Seat belts and condoms have years of testing stop muddying the water with non-sense.

If you want the vaccine that’s okay but it’s not a miracle and it doesn’t have enough research behind it to make any concrete promises.

You are all gambling with your lives. It may be a mistake. Imagine dying with your ignorant pride.

This will not work in the BVI. Trust me. this is infringing on one's religious rights, one's personal rights, one's private right, and one's constitutional rights.

Until govt find awsy to get their workers to take the vaccine we will continue to fall behind, . Even health Workers and front line workers are refusing to take their vaccine,, yet they collect their big salaries every two weeks when they are the oned preventing govt from making money....Govt need to take the bull by the horn. Right decisions are often unpopular but rewarding.... I big up UVI for taking the bull by the horn and making the tuff decision, a decision that their business survival, may well depend on,, Look whats going on in ST Kitts, right across from us, one spread , contact tracing can shut everything down, Use that as an example, a good reason to get fully vaccinated...We cant afford that, tbe country cant afford that, our businesses cant afford that...

I agree. . As a health supervisor.. cant understand why health workers front line workers refusing to take the vaccine. To me its in total conflict of the profession. Govt should make it mandatory for us front line workers....We lead from the front during medical emergencies...Which Covid is...Not taking the vaccine is bad but to bad mouth it and encourage others not to take it. There is no room in this profession for such behavior

Perhaps you should take heed that something is wrong why Healthcare work Ed's aren't taken unapproved vaccines.

UVI will have to redact that policy as it is illegal. You can't force or mandate students to take any vaccine. The human rights violations are plenty with this.

This isn't anything particularly new. Universities in the states already require that students are up to date with vaccinations before granting admission to study. Why would you allow someone who could make you all sick to potentially infect staff and students? Freedom of choice does not mean freedom to infringe on the health of others

It is very important that the Government is watching the situation correctly with the covid and is taking the right step in this direction. Moreover, it is very important, because students are vulnerable, because they are constantly in contact with a large number of people who can carry the infection. I hope in the future that in the event of such problems, such problems will also be promptly resolved!
I wish you all good health, good luck!
