LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI- A man was left nursing gunshot injuries following a shooting incident last night, Friday, July 18, 2025.

The shooting incident occurred in the Long Bush area, a police press release said. The unnamed victims is currently hospitalised.

RVIPF officer shot at & other major incidents

The RVIPF also reported that officers were shot at while pursuing suspects in a suspected vehicle theft last night.

The officers “came under direct gunfire” during the pursuit, and luckily, the responding officers were not injured during the exchange.

The RVIPF also conducted several other operations overnight as efforts to rid communities of illegal firearms intensify.

The overnight operations were described as being a “night marked by both successful police operations and violent incidents”.

During an armed robbery Friday night, outside a nightclub in Road Town, a male was robbed of cash.

Stop-and-checks

The RVIPF also conducted stop-and-check operations across Tortola Friday night.

During one such operation in the Huntums Ghut area, a firearm and ammunition were recovered during a vehicle search, which led to the arrest of one male in connection with this discovery.

“This marks the second firearm seized by police in the past 48 hours and brings the total number of illegal firearms removed from the streets in 2025 to 14,” the release explained.

A dangerous escalation- ACP Vanterpool

Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool described the events that unfolded overnight as a dangerous escalation, which will be met with a firm and focused police response.

“While we’re making progress in removing illegal weapons, tonight’s events show our work is far from done…Attacks on our officers and community members will not be tolerated. We have dedicated teams working around the clock on these investigations.”

According to ACP Vanterpool, all victims involved are receiving the necessary support.

Intensive and active investigations are ongoing.

The public is urged to contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339 or the Crime Stoppers line at 800-8477 (TIPS) or overseas to (284) 800-8477, with any information.

ALL Police Officers need to carry guns! Imagine, these criminals are shooting at the Police now. The criminals have more weapons than the police! Now is the time to change the rules, and every Officer should have weapons to protect themselves and the public, because this place has gotten out of hand, and we, the public, are scared of these gun-toting criminals doing what they want to.

4 Police walking in camo in town didnt help. All the tactics except community building and parade around in a show of force but not have equipment when on the job. Please do not take the machine guns out for this years Christmas community events as it is unnecessary and unsightly in a crowd. Meanwhile it has become more dangerous for everyone. At the club at the ATM. Police should be at the club not undercover but in uniforms! How many incidents happen at the clubs need to happen for them to park up there. Man shot in long bush is a same old news story. Good work otherwise.

I must commend the work that's taking place to rid the streets of guns. I'm not sure why we can't find the source of the massive amount of guns coming into the territory, but this should be at the highest priority.

Find the source(s) then we'll see less of these types of crimes. The boarders are porous and seems the people at the Frontline are on a vacation.

You can see more community support at funerals honoring those known for bad behavior and terrorizing the neighborhood, not when it comes to helping the police with information.

You will be lucky to meet the police on the beach at night never mind the ATM when you are with your sweet heart. Changing the rules sound like allowing everyone who is not a robber to protect themselves.
