Man allegedly threatened to have gunmen kill child mother!

- Granted $35K bail
Butler has to return to the Magistrate’s Court on May 9, 2012.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Twenty year-old Michael Butler, who punched, choked and notified the mother of his three year-old child that three gun men were at her home to kill her, was granted $35,000 bail with one signed surety when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, April 23, 2012.

The charges were not read to the Virgin Islander therefore he was not required to plea. He is represented by Mary Lou Creque.

However, Crown Counsel Herbert Potter in outlining the facts in the case informed Magistrate Tamia Richards that between 7 and 8 p.m. on March 14, 2012, Nakida Wheatley – the Virtual Complainant (VC) – was in the vicinity of the Willard Wheatley Primary school talking to some friends when Butler allegedly walked up, took away her cell phone and hit her with his hands.

“She [the VC] then made her escape from the beating by riding on a scooter driven by one of her male friends to the Rite Way parking lot in Pasea. He [Butler] followed. While in the said parking lot, she saw Michael Butler approaching her and in fear of him she was trying to get into the vehicle of one of her male friends but he grabbed hold of her and began to punch her with his closed fists. He was also chocking her,” Crown Counsel Potter revealed in court.

According to him, the VC struggled to get free, and was rescued by her friends who allegedly pulled Butler away.

It is alleged when he let her go, in a loud voice, said “I have three gunmen waiting by your house and if you go home you will be dead.” A report was made to the Road Town Police Station the same evening. On April 2, 2012, Butler was officially charged.

Albeit, the Crown did not oppose to bail, a request was made for the defendant to stay away from the VC, which was granted by the Magistrate. He is not to communicate with her “whatsoever” not even on Facebook, Magistrate Richards instructed.

Butler, who resides at Meyers, also has to report to the Road Town Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

His next court date is May 9, 2012.

Why was there no objection to bail? This man will think that there is no consequence for his behaviour. Was the victim even consulted to see if she is afraid. I find this disturbing, that is a lot of anger, he drove from East to Pasea and then kept beating her up. Prosecutors need to start taking domestic violence seriously.

I don't agree with the granting of bail. Too much domestic violence going on. If I were the VC I'd be very upset and be worried. His actions show an escalating trend of violent behavior. He followed her and uttered a death threat. He should be enrolled in a behavior counselling course immediately. I pray he leaves the VC alone and the Magistrate does not regret her decision.
