ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our news centre from senior sources within the Governor’s Office is that former Treasury Consultant Arnold J. Ainsley has been appointed to act as Accountant General in the [British] Virgin Islands.

He has replaced acting Accountant General and Virgin Islander Anna A. Rabsatt who has moved back to the Ministry of Finance.

Mr Ainsley is a Jamaica national and had also worked in the Turks and Caicos Islands as Accountant General following the invasion and direct rule by the British in 2009.

It is unclear why Mr Ainsley was appointed and if Governor John J. Rankin, CMG had a hand in this appointment.

Our newsroom was informed by the same sources that Mr Ainsley started work as Acting Accountant General on Monday, January 24, 2022.

It was on June 7, 2021, that our news centre reported the removal of another Acting Accountant General  Laurel L. Smith.

It is our understanding that one of Mr Ainsley's main assignments is to bring all Treasury Financial reports up to date to allow them to be audited, something the current Andrew A.  Fahie (R1) Government inherited from the ousted National Democratic Party (NDP) Administration.

Both Premier Fahie and Acting Financial Secretary Jeremiah G. A. Frett did not respond to our queries while Mr Ainsley could not be reached up to time of publication.

We will bring more information as the story unfolds.

That is what they all do. Come to consult, give a poor report, then recommend themselves into the jobs. And we buy it, hook, line and sinker. Calling more consultants....to an island near St. Thomas.

He also worked in BVI for 2 years previously. If he gave a poor report why would they want him for the job…

wow this article is missing some facts…

Anna did not stand a chance! The workers were against Laurel being removed, hence, they refused to work with her.

How the hell we come from having local fully train Accountant Generals to non Virgin Islanders. This is not advancing us. This is moving us back to when we had to rely on expat to head us. It look like every major department will be headed by non citizens. I thought they were for us when they campaigned of moving the country in one direction. Only that direction appear to not be in favour of us. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not against expat but if we must hire non Virgin Islanders it should be someone who resides in the country for a number of years. They should have residency. VIP govt really disappointing.

I believe this appointment came from the governor's office. He is the head of the Public Service.

This does not sound like a VIP move as if this is the same Accountant general that was appointed before the TCI constitution was suspended this may well be a UK move. Governor is in charge of the civil service so interesting times ahead.

I am also wondering if the Premier has any objection to the appointment. If he does, he should immediately tell the people so and don't wait until years from now to say he did. The Governor alone cannot make these decisions and we know that. Waiting to see what happens.

You all watch the COI, and now acting like you did not realized it is the money that the big question is about. So the smart thing to do is to get quick help, the lady did not loose her job, she is being fixed in another position.

This might be that she cannot handle the heavy load of accounts. Managing those books is not an easy job. Records are coming from all different department. Journal Entries has to be done each day, Updating Income statement, Balance Sheet , Updating asset depreciation. These are dauting exercise and each day follow up has to be made, one mistake and books are all over the place. If the country needs help then get the best people to help, but place the local people as assistant to ensure when the contract is over they can take over again. But it might be more in the mortar than pestle.

That is no excuse about her not being able to handle heavy loads of accounts. Fraser wife did it and did a very good job at it.

    • Lord Max (28/01/2022, 09:22) Like (2) Dislike (1) Reply
Not a lot, cause in Jamaica you need to have formal training to even sell a patty.

Yet when they come they do not know their head from their foot and still have to be trained. They over promote themselves.

BVI islanders are qualified in the field of accounting at all levels . to have this happen in 2022 is a backward step. Qualified islanders must come home and help build their country. Also professionalism is the key to a successful accountant. no political party run you. your professional ethics is your guide. you are there to serve the people. stand up for professionalism .
