Lifting of Order in Council is a ‘national victory’- Hon Kye M. Rymer
Hon Rymer gave his contribution during the Fourth Sitting of the Third Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA), during which members attended a special sitting to recognise the lifting of the Virgin Islands Constitution Interim Amendment Order 2022.
The revocation of the Order in Council took effect on Friday, March 13, 2026, following the Virgin Islands Constitution Interim Amendment Revocation Order 2026, which was laid in the UK Parliament on February 10, 2026, and approved days prior by the Privy Council.
Hon Rymer revealed that the members of the then Cabinet found out about the CoI at the same time the rest of the world did.
“It was shocking as we sat there in Cabinet, processing what was actually happening, what was unfolding before us.”
A day for standing tall
The CoI, he said, consumed fifteen months of national life; however added, “From the beginning we committed to the process, because whatever the outcome, we figured that it would restore trust in public institutions and be the journey we had to take towards self-determination.”
March 13, 2026, Hon Rymer said, is not a day for meeting gratitude of bowed heads.
“To me, this is a day for standing tall. This is a national victory, and it belongs to every man, woman, every child of these Virgin Islands, whether home or abroad.”
Hon Rymer also thanked those who committed to supporting the government in ensuring the reforms recommended by the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) were implemented.
The order was held in reserve while the government of the Virgin Islands developed and implemented the reforms recommended by the Commission of Inquiry (CoI). If the order were to have been enforced, it would have suspended significant portions of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007.
