ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Territory At-Large Representative Hon Stacy R. Mather, MBE, has encouraged Virgin Islanders to know the laws of the land.

During his weekly ‘Mather Minute’ on October 28, 2026, Hon Mather said that too often people depend on what others say about the law as the truth but don't check for themselves.

“Too often we hear someone say, ‘The law says this’ or ‘You can’t do that’ and simply take their word for it. But you can check for yourself.”

The laws of the Virgin Islands are available online at laws.gov.vg.

“There you can search the constitution, laws currently in force, revised laws, proposed bills, repealed legislation, and even United Kingdom laws extended to the Virgin Islands.”

Take a minute

Hon Mather advised persons to take a minute to go online, read the laws and become better informed about the laws that govern the Virgin Islands. “Know the law, know your rights, know your responsibilities.”

While encouraging persons to become familiar with the laws, Honourable Mather also encouraged them to seek proper legal advice when needed.

“When you need legal advice or help understanding how the law applies to your situation, consult an attorney.”

So true! Especially these days with some of those new officers who been here less than 10 years. I have even experienced some senior officers not correct on points of VI Law but they swear we don't know anything.
