ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our newsroom from sources within the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour is that former Employment Services Manager within the Labour and Workforce Development Department Mrs Kishann Cupid-Braithwaite has been appointed as the Territory’s acting Labour Commissioner.

It is unclear the duration of Cupid-Brathwaite's appointment, but it comes weeks after the Labour Commissioner, Mrs Michelle A. McLean, proceeded on vacation leave until about October 2022.

Another senior officer within the department, Ms Althea Guishard, was performing the duties of Labour Commissioner; however, it is unclear why she was not given an acting appointment.

Sources familiar with the appointment also said Mrs Cupid-Braithwaite, who has worked at the Labour Department for years, had applied for the Commissioner’s post last year; however, once it was given to Mrs McLean she requested a transfer from the Labour and Workforce Development Department.

What is the Commissioner & Minister's relationship?

There are also reports there are growing tensions between Mrs McLean and the new Labour Minister Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull (R2); however, the issues are said to be confidential.

The Labour Department continues to be under fire for the slow pace of work permit processing; however, it is reportedly due to the lack of human resources and appropriate senior staff. Many of the positions in the Department remain vacant over the years.

As acting Labour Commissioner, Mrs Cupid-Braithwaite will manage the Department of Labour and Workforce Development to ensure effective administration of the Labour Code; participate in the preparation, coordination and administration of national employment policy; and provide technical advice to the Minister as it relates to labour matters and markets.

We will bring more details as they become available.

This reeks of politics and is a good example of why individuals who lack professionalism and decency will make and/or support decisions like this.

Problem 1. There is an absolute lack of succession planning in gov. That breeds crap like this.
    2. The deputy should always be in line to succeed the commissioner. Not even a discussion.
    3. In what organization can a subordinate apply for the same position as their boss and have the chance of becoming their boss’s boss? Absolute nonsense.

We must stop disregarding the office an individual holds and only pay attention to the name of the person in the position. Please respect the power of the office the person holds. This is hurting this place in a big way. God help this BVI.

During you time, please speak to your staff and not take sides. You have proven that you will listen to what others have to say and not the employee themselves.

Congratulations on the post, but the employee's voice needs to be heard also.

Sometimes we BV Islanders need to be honest with ourselves. And being honest means that sometimes we have to admit when one of our own is not getting the job done. Mrs. McLean is a lovely lady, but being a lovely lady does not mean that we leave her in a job that is clearly not the right one for her. And we have to be blunt and honest. For all the private businesses out here trying to get persons hired it has been an absolute nightmare dealing with the Labour Department. Sadly, the head (Mrs McLean) takes the fall. Unfortunately, the minister should also take he fall. We should never leave an individual in a position that is not right for them. We do them a disservice by giving therm a bad name by saying they are inept, and we do ourselves a disservice by not getting the quality service we deserve. I hope Mrs. McLean is put in a position where the outstanding qualities she has can be of use. She is far too nice person to be at Labour. She hates to hurt people's feelings and nothing is wrong with that but the job was just not right for her. Sorry to say, but you need a beast who will do what is right and #$%^&* the politicians. Put her somewhere where we need a nice, responsible, truthful person. A department where you NEED to see the face of someone who is caring, polite and knows what they are doing. Mrs. Cupid-Brathwaite, you are a God fearing Christian woman and you will need to get accustomed to being on your knees with this new job. There is no doubt you can do the job. Keep God first and do your thing. You have proven that you can work. Get ready to do so.

Question. When is the Government going to stop this 'acting' thing? I mean when you get a job at a private firm you are placed on probation for three months. However, in government, you are acting for years!!! This nonsense needs to stop!! I am in government and I am acting for about eight years! Up to now, I can't get a confirmation letter!! This is the height of nonsense. It seems like you are in some kind of movie. Acting! Acting!! Governor, please look into this situation. Thanks.

    Happy for her.

Of course there will be yays and nays but at the end of the day, God's will must prevail.

All of Tortola needs a shake up. Every nook and cranny! The women and men that try to interfere with God's ordinances are of this world. They need a shake up! When a shake up happens and genuine followers of Christ are in the midst, God will make provisions for His own.

But Shake Up Indeed Is Needed On A Massive Scale!!!
