King for a day, but will it be enough for NCAA?

Karene King moved up to 38th in the NCAA Rankings for the 200m, but faces an anxious wait to see if it qualifies her for the Championships.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Karene King won the 200-meter dash at the Iowa State Qualifier on Saturday March 3, 2012 and team mate Geronne Black won the 60 metres, but neither could improve on their bests to move up in the indoor rankings.

King also ran in the 60-meter prelims and advanced to the event finals with a time of 7.57, Black had the fastest prelim time with a mark of 7.48.

Black won the finals with a time of 7.40, which tied her altitude-adjusted time and after a third place finish in the 60-meter finals with a time of 7.56, King turned her attention to the 200-meters.

King broke the Big Sky Conference's all-time record in the 200-meters with a time of 23.77 (altitude-adjusted to 23.91) and ranked 49th in the nation coming into the qualifier on Saturday.

She ran a time of 23.80 in the 200-meters which improved her national ranking in the event to 38th overall which probably won’t be high enough to advance her to the NCAA championship and extend her final season with Portland State.

King will also represent the Virgin Islands at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, this weekend.

The Vikings now prepare themselves for the outdoor track season, which begins for them on March 18 in Eugene, Ore. at Historic Heyward Field for the Oregon Preview.

Meanwhile, Kanishque Todman earned Jr. College All America honors on Friday March 2, 2012, when she placed fourth in the NJCAA Indoor Championships Pentathlon, during the competition held at Eastern Illinois University.

Central Arizona College freshman Todman amassed 3220 points for her fourth place finish. She also was ninth in the open Long Jump after leaping 5.23m and helping Central Arizona to amass 91 points while finishing second to Iowa Central Community College who had 187.

At the ECAC Indoor Championships in Boston, Morgan State Bears Jr. sprinter Britney Wattley, had 60 and 200m personal bests in placing sixth in both events. She began by running a personal best of 7.54, improved to 7.52 in the semis before her 7.59 final.

She was sixth overall with a personal best of 24.47 seconds in the 200m, after turning in 24.66 to qualify.
