ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Three of the Virgin Islands' most talented athletes, representing their respective universities, continue to run well and improve on their times or marks at various Indoor Meets on Saturday January 21, 2012.

In the 60m at the Illini Classic, senior Ashley Kelly who finished second in a time of 7.58 seconds for a second place finish set her new personal best and for the second consecutive year, the Illinois women's track and field team won the title by scoring 227 points to top the other eight schools competing at the Armory.

Next week, the Illini will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, on Saturday, January 28 to compete in the Mark Colligan Memorial Invitational. The University of Nebraska hosts the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Championships later this season.

Karene King and Dominique Maloney also had a good day as the Portland State indoor track teams competed in the Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Karene King won her heat of the women's 200 with a time of 24.08 which was good enough to finish second overall for the event. Her time is just 0.06 seconds off her school record, which she set last year.

Senior Dominique Maloney finished in ninth place in the women's 400 with a career-best time of 56.90 which places her third all-time at Portland State for the event.

The Vikings will be back out on the track next Friday and Saturday, January 27-28 at the UW Invitational in Seattle, Washington. It will be the second of three trips to the Dempsey Indoor Track this season for the Vikings.

On Friday January 20, 2012, Brittany Wattley running for the Morgan State Bears at the Great Dane Classic in Albany, finished 12th overall in the 400 metres with her time of 58.08. She also finished 2nd in her 60m final with a time of 7.64, which was good enough for 3rd place overall.

Both times are her personal bests and qualified her for the IC4A/ECAC Championships in the 60m.

Wattley then competed at the Terrapin Invitational Indoor Meet on Saturday and ran 25.80 in the 200 metres to place second.

It is always good to hear about our fantastic athletes. I continue to be impressed by both their talent and their wonderful personalities. It is a thrill to watch them run, and a joy to speak to them.
