THE SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI- The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change is assessing the situation where dead fish were found at the Salt Pond in Anegada.

According to information obtained from residents on Anegada, the sargassum seaweed infiltrated the pond near the entrance of the Flamingo Pond Lookout. 

District Nine Representative and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley, confirmed the subsequent dying of “juvenile fish” following sargassum ingress into the Salt Pond. 

A critical ecosystem

“A team from the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change was dispatched to Anegada to assess the situation and come up with a solution,” Hon Wheatley added in his statement today, Friday, May 1, 2026. 

The minister said he is awaiting the report and action plan following the team’s visit, as “it is a critical ecosystem that must be protected”.

    there used to be a net people would pull over to protect the pond but now its gone and so are all the fish, these people from NRCC don't have a scooby doo whats going on, telling people to let the sea do its natural thing and now up inspecting tryong to stop the sea doing its natural thing....

      Amazing that people think this is not related to what humans are doing. It doesn't matter if you get your info from Fox News or some other source telling you that nature is just nature and we can't anything to change it. We already have and we continue to change it. Those in denial are simply in denial because it suits them. Those who live and work in nature all over the world know it is changing and can see the effects we humans are having on it.
      The BVI needs to wake up!
