USVI: Virgin Islands to Expect Another Year of Heavy Sargassum in 2026, DPNR Warns

FREDERIKSTED, St. Croix, USVI- Virgin Islands residents and coastal businesses are being advised to prepare for what officials expect will be another year of heavy sargassum accumulation along local shorelines, following new scientific assessments indicating elevated levels across the Caribbean and Atlantic heading into 2026.
Influx of Sargassum could continue for days or weeks
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The influx of Sargassum seaweed may continue over the coming days and even weeks, a Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change press release on Friday, August 1, 2025, has advised.

Two companies, one U.S.-based and the other French, recently found themselves in the front lines in the battle to rid beaches of sargassum, the stinky, brown, ugly masses of floating seaweed that are carpeting the shorelines of popular destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
